DVD help; fullscreen vs. widescreen?
I can't find a single website that will answer my
question without going into a language other than
English.
I have a regular 4:3 non-HDTV television, and a DVD
player. I want to buy the Star Wars movies on DVD, but I
have some questions about the differences between
fullscreen and widescreen versions.
If I buy a fullscreen version, will the left and right
hand sides of the picture be cut off, or will there be
the black bars at the top and bottom? If I buy a
widescreen version, will the picture be squished? Help!

Easy
Your tv or dvd player won't do any squishing or cutting,
the studios do that for you.
Widescreen will have the black bars on the top and
bottom, you will get the same picture you got in the
movies.
Fullscreen will have the sides lopped off, it will take
up the whole screen and the actors will look a bit bigger
because of this, however you lose all the stuff that's
going on in the sides.

Widescreen will give you black bars on top and bottom -
But you will see the movie as the director envisioned it.
If your TV is fairly large, with good resolution, this is
definitely the way to go. Full screen will fill the
entire screen, but you lose the action to the left and
right.
Hope that helps.

Widescreen
While either works on your current set, ONLY widescreen
DVDs will work on the new 16 X 9 sets coming soon to a
Big Box Store near you...
Some don't like the black bars, but atleast you get the
entire frame as the makers intended. Full screen does a
'pan and scan' tracking only about 70% of the full image.
I just got the new Star Wars, Widescreen... It's
amazing...
If you don't like the bars, sit closer to the screen!!!

here you go
Full screen is also known as pan and scan. It sucks. You
basically lose the sides of the picture. Often, you'll
lose one side, then the other, as the editor decides
which of two people you should see during dialogue. Why
directors allow this to happen is beyond me. The best
example of this is Lawrence of Arabia. It's a completely
different film when seen in pan and scan, and not a good
one.
The other form, widescreen, is also known as letterbox.
This glorious setup gives you the entire film, as
intended by the director. The film is "squished", it's
shown in its full grandeur. The black bars at the top and
bottom are simply a reflection of the fact that most
televisions are shaped wrong.
Since I bought my first DVD player, I haven't watched a
film on video tape by choice. I was forced to see one
last week, and it drove me crazy. It's like having a full
stereo, and listening to everything in mono.

Thanks for the wonderful explanation
I'll be advising my wife to buy widescreen from now on. We
have a 27" TV, and it has done the job well, and our next tv
will most likely be a HDTV, and even that, we'll make sure it
is good quality too (I don't give a damn about stereo quality
since both of us are deaf)
