Hi,

Have you seen O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Any thoughts about O Brother, Where Art Thou?

I loved it. It may not be the greatest of the Coen brothers' films,
but I thought it was one of their most entertaining and accessible
ones. I was just wondering what others thought about this particular
film or any others by Joel and Ethan Coen (Fargo, Raising Arizona, The
Big Lebowski).

Love the movie. Love the soundtrack. I couldn't get into Raising Arizona
and I've never seen The Big Lebowski but Fargo is another huge favorite of
mine.

I've said my peace and counted to three!

I loved the movie as well. Very funny, very beautifully shot, etc.

I thought it was funny and had a god soundtrack, although it was far from
the Coen brothers best. I'd give it a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10. I thought the
following Coen brothers fims were superior; Blood Simple, Raising Arizona,
Barton Fink(by a hair), Fargo and The Big Lebowski. I would put in on a par
with Miller's Crossing, the only Coen's brother film I felt it was better than
was The Hudsucker Proxy.

I bought the DVD because it was on sale, got good reviews and I overheard a
guy in the office saying how he couldnt stand it and left the theater early.
You know it is a good movie if some people hate it, because lets face it,
some people have no taste.

It turned out to be an excellent movie, though I had my doubts during the
first half. All the characters are interesting, there is a plot, many
surprises. It is funny, though not much in the first half.

I thought it was the Coen Brothers worst movie to date.Just because a person
doesn't like a movie that you like doesn't mean they have no taste. I'm a big
fan of the Coen Brothers, I just didn't care for this film.

I doubt he will answer. He should have said why he didn't like OBWAT in his
original post. Blanket statements of whether one personally likes a movie or
not are pretty useless here, yet people make them all the time, and rarely
defend them.

There was probably a song, a character, or a scene in the movie somewhere
which triggered bad memories for him and he subconsciously associated it
with a bad movie. Maybe he zoned out for a bit and lost something critical.
Who knows.

I had not even heard of "Coen Brothers" before I saw OBWAT. Which is good,
because I would have had expectations. I never want to go into a movie with
expectations, other than that the flick will be worth my time and cash.

I had seen Fargo and The Big Lebowski. I did not like Fargo (although I was
probably taking it too seriously, an easy mistake to make in OBWAT too). I
can't remember exactly why, except that the two plots (the police and the
criminals) seemed only coincidental to each other, no real interaction, no
real clever detectivework. I like the interesting characters in OBWAT and
TBL. I did not find the characters interesting in Fargo.

I loved The Big Lebowski, especially John Goodman's character and the
Nihilist "kidnappers". That was great. The scene with the submachinegun and
the ransome delivery was genious.

The acting was awful. George Clooney can't act for shit, every movie I have
seen him in was awful(except 3 Kings). I didn't care for the music either,
although I know the soundtrack is very popular. The movie was extremely boring,
I didnt laugh once in the whole movie. The only parts of the movie that were
okay was the scene with John Goodman and Babyface Nelson.
I've seen every Coen Brothers movie, and I like all of them on a
different level. OBWAT was a big disappointment though.

Yeah. Especially compared to a quality movie like "Mallrats". "The acting
was awful," LOL. All the actors were terrible? So the Coen just looked
around for all the worst actors they could find and put them into OBWAT?
Really? This kind of generalization doesn't help your credibility very much.

George Clooney was playing a slick fast-talking, yet thoughtful character.
His performance was always closely followed by the cameras. I am glad you
gave him credit for difficulty. 3 Kings included a lot of action going on
and fancy special effects that could have distracted you from Clooney's
"bad" acting. Maybe you should go back and watch it again.

> I didn't care for the music either,

No doubt. Maybe you should come out with a rap version.

> although I know the soundtrack is very popular. The movie was extremely
boring,

It was slow in parts. But the slow parts were used for character
development. For instance, the part where they went to the river and got
"saved" showed us that these guys were not all that bad. A movie about
escaped convicts generally brings with it a belief in the audience that they
might not deserve the freedom they seek due to their previous
transgressions. Most of these little scenes that bored you (and me until I
saw the rationale for them later in the movie) were important in making the
characters sympathetic.

"The scene" with John Goodman? You mean the KKK scene or the resteraunt
scene? Why did you like "that" scene? I could explain to you why I liked it.

This movie did require some thought on the part of the viewer. Of course,
not every viewer wants to have to think at a movie.

When I saw 'OBWAT', I'd already seen quite a few Coen Brothers movies, so I
knew the type of thing to expect. I can't say I felt let down, especially
after having seen all the 5-star reviews it received. I would certainly go
along with that assessment of the film.

I loved 'Fargo'. I remember watching it and just thinking how brilliant a
film it was. Like you, I also liked 'The Big Lebowski' and I thought
'Raising Arizona' was great as well. I don't remember any other ones I've
seen by them, but I know that they are certainly some of my favourite
directors.

Hey. I got the impression when I watched it that it was based on the Oddysey by
Homer. I was really high tho, so I was probably way off my rocker or somethin.
Is it?

Yeah, it is. I could only pick out a few moments though. The sirens that
seduced the three guys, Cyclops, played by John Goodman, And I forget what
else. That's all that comes to mind. I need to re-read The Odyssey. Smart
people around here should be able to tell us.

Well you are right about the sirens, and cylops bit. The other bits were the
long journey and I guess the transformation of the frog instead of them
turning to pigs on the island of Circe.

The rigging on the ships. Also, the prison uniforms were made from
toga fabric, and Odysseus used a pomade.

Yeah, right.

But they throws us'n a curve ball...

Clooney's name is uh "Ulysses" which'n is seenonymous with "Odysseus".
Seems like I heard that name somwhere else a ways back.

And I'm seemin' to remember Poseidon almost a drownin' Odysseus causn' he's
angry with Odysseus.

It's a great old story. Robert Halmi (Hercules, Xena) did a fun mini-series
a few years back, which was very faithful to Homer's tale.
