The eye glows were a complicated set of moving noise, blurring,
and enhancement of the live photography. The work was designed
here by Jamie Dixon, and Constance Bracewell animated the shots.
Basically, the eyes had to be rotoscoped from the background,
a series of 2D operations were performed, and then laid back
over the image. Constance would animate the brightness and
contrast of the glows to reflect what was going on during the shot.
The smoke was done by tracking the position of the eyes using
our 3D tracking program; then we created smoke sources that
tracked along with the eyes. Again, Constance would animate the
brightness, thickness, turbulence, and all other smoke parameters
based on the needs of the shot.
I wrote all of the software that we used; you can see some of it
described on our web page. We had a blast working on the movie;
it was great to be part of it.
