So, Lewis can't say "her ass is stickin' up in the air", but Tommy can say "angels fly outta yer arse".

Jack and Fab can say "sons o' bitches" and "bastardo", but Fabrizio can't say "ma va fancolo", whatever the hell that means.

Did anyone catch whether they left in the god damns or not? I missed it.

And the blurs on the drawing - HAW HAW HAW!!!!

I won't be able to watch all of it. Somebody tell me what I missed.

Sorry about the other post with no post.

This is why I had no interest in writing it. Network censors are
bullshit. "Damn" is OK, but "God Damn" is not. Breasts are OK to show
if they are on women of African descent, and then only in an African
setting.

Offensive my butt.

If anything's offensive, it's the idea that a movie depicting the deaths
of 1500 people is sold as "holiday family entertainment." It bothered
me when the movie opened, though at least then it was just an Oscar
grab.

I guess NBC didn't care if the movie was chopped to pieces. They bought
the movie right for a bargain price of $30 million compared to $80
million for Jurassic Park. Titanic made $1 billion more than Jurassic
Park. Whoever in Paramount made that deal with NBC should get fired.

Well, I ended up seeing the whole thing after all. And was it just me or did Lewis really say fuck? I listened really close to see what they would put in. It didn't sound like they bleeped a thing. He could've said "frickin' hand" but it sure didn't sound like it.

It's funny, you wouldn't believe how many people think 'God damn" means 'damn God'. I guess the censors are included in that group.

Yes, I was just thinking how stupid it is that they would blur breasts, which we have ALL seen, but leave in the horrifying shot of a frozen mother and baby. I mean really, which is more disturbing? It ain't hard, NBC!

Speaking of breasts, why did they blur it for the first fleeting glimpse we get of the drawing, but not later on when Jack is clearly concentrating very hard on getting the NIPPLE just right, blushing and squinting and biting his tongue and chuckling nervously. Well, I'm sure it had something to do with the first instance being in the 6:00 hour and the second in the 8:00 hour. But it's still stupid.

Hi all. I didn't feel the need to watch the network airing of the movie, but
was interested in what everyone's comments would be. Just a few replies...

I've always wondered about network censors myself. I mean, who do they pick
to do this anyway? As for the showing of Rose's breasts....now this is just
a guess, but since I know the movie started at 7:00 (Eastern time anyway),
it's possible that they didn't want to show that much skin that early in the
evening. 7:00 p.m. isn't considered prime time. It's more in the family
viewing hour, so they may have blurred things early on because of the hour.
It would have been much later in the evening when Jack was drawing Rose, so
maybe they just felt that it was "safe" to show Kate/the drawing at a later
time. While I don't find the drawing or the nudity in any way offensive to
me personally, plenty of people would. I don't know how many parents I saw
in the theater who covered their kids' eyes when Kate appeared nude during
that drawing scene! Just goes to show you how weird people can be
(especially when some of these kids were at least 11-12 years old!).

As for the question of whether Titanic was "holiday family entertainment..."
well, I dunno. I don't remember it being billed as holiday family fare in
the weeks leading up to the movie's release in '97. I only caught a few of
the network previews for last night's TV premiere...but I don't recall it
being billed as family fare for that either. Although I will say that I saw
some incredibly cheesy and tasteless ads! Did anyone else see the one where
they showed previews along with the tune of the Love Boat theme--only the
words were changed to fit the Titanic movie? That was by far the worst! I
think, however, that the timing of the network premiere was dollar oriented,
bottom line. Thanksgiving weekend is a good time to air a movie premiere,
because either people are at home or with family watching TV. That's what
many people do over a holiday weekend, so the networks will want to
capitalize on it. If they paid that much money for the rights to Titanic,
then they're going to have to air it when they will get the best advertising
dollars--which happens when the execs know that people will be sitting in
front of the tube. If I hadn't already seen it, I would have watched it
myself because I was home relaxing after a busy weekend (although the
commercials would have driven me nuts during that long of a movie!). And as
you said, Jill, they pushed for the December film release in '97, probably
in part for the "Oscar grab," but also because people are home for the
holidays, and looking for a movie to watch (dollars again).

I'm still curious though...does anyone know who the network censors are, and
how they get hired for such a job? I mean, what qualifications must a person
have to be able to decide what's "offensive" and what's not. What offends me
might not offend someone else, and vice versa. I wonder how much they get
paid to do that????

Take care. Tina.

America is a strange nation.
A nation
- whose president gets a young girl in the oval office to do sexual things
- that is still INTERESTED in keeping up an amount of atomic weapons
- which has one of the *highest* raping rates all over the world
- that has a so-called "Statue of Liberty" (Liberty for WHAT? Freedom in
mind and thoughts, I don't think so!) to greet the immigrants
is too prude to show a DRAWING of a not even full shown naked girl on TV.
Ha, ha.
If THIS is the land where everyones dreams come true - "from dishwasher to
millionaire" - I'd rather stay at home in Germany.
To prevent questions: Yes, I know that the movie was made in America by and
with Americans.
No, I really like America.
But what is going on my nerves is this *brutality* in your country which is
used to prevent people from seeing other people naked. I will not wonder any
more about *some* men raping girls instead over there...
Just *had* to say that, sorry if I offended anyone.
Kind regards
Sabine

I had my closed captioning on to see what changes were made, and it showed
the word "freakin'" for that part.

When they film a movie, do they have the actor read over a cuss word so
the movie can be eventually shown on tv? When Lewis said freaking, it
sounded just like him.

they also cut out "ok enough of that bullshit" when brock was filming.
they also cut out "shit" when he didn't find the diamond in the safe.

this country has no problems showing items like JFKs head being shot
off, but God forbid we hear "shit" on tv or Howard Stern wants to show
a couple naked boobs at midnight.......

Yet they can show Shindlers List in its full entirety on regular Network TV,
with F words, nudity and head shots...? There was only a 15min recess in the
middle of the movie? A few yrs back... how did they get away with that one?
yet they can't show Titanic in its full entirety? Its BS. Thats why I
don't watch movies that have been converted to regular TV airings...

I think they must do that. On the other hand, it's funny when they do a bad job of it. My favorite is from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. He says, "Cameron's so tight that if you shoved a piece of coal *IN HIS HAND* and pulled it out a week later, you'd have a diamond." It sounds ridiculous!

Sometimes they do other times someone else does it later when it's being
edited for television. The most obvious case I've seen recently of
someone thinking ahead for when a movie is shown on television is Austin
Powers for the character Allota Vagina (or something like that). In the
TV version she's called Allota Cleavagé (or something like that) and
there's even a caption which says something like Allota Cleavagé's Hotel
Room 11:00PM for when Austin's doing some "reconnaissance".

...because it's all just totally arbitrary bullshit. If they want to
show or say something they will if not they'll cut it out in the name of
"decency" when it's really just to make it appear like they give a damn
about a bunch of prudes who have nothing better to do than complain
about hearing somebody say shit and since it is just for appearances and
they care nothing about meaning or content (also most of the people who
complain about such things are too stupid to understand meaning and
content) they can leave in something like "bugger me!" which most people
in this country won't understand, though I think a few more than 5% know
what it means Tom.

God, weren't the censor's bloody annoying!

And the editing was a crap shoot if I ever heard one.

I loved whem Lieberman just appeared there for a few seconds...

Let's see... no "god" anywhere. And they cut out a LOT of things. Also they
bleeped a lot too.

Scenes I noticed that were edited:

Molly boards accidently before when that scene happened in the movie.

No "god damns" but "son of a bitch" is plentiful.

The iceberg spotting scene was totally chopped to bits.

The chase scene was chopped...

When Jack shows Rose his drawings you only see a couple. None of the "paris"
women.

The kimono is darkend, the drawing is blurred, but when we see Jack drawing the
nipple it is there in full glory.

The "jesus mary and joseph" line was chopped to "mary and joseph."

I know there is more but I was totally in and out of the room during the movie.

To add insult to injury, later in the week (I believe on Thursday's ER
episode), someone "flips the bird" at one of the doctors. Now they can do
it on ER, but they cut it from the showing of Titanic? Makes no sense.
Both occurred in the 9-11p.m. time period, after "kiddie hour."
