I have to say I didn't notice that at all at the movie. However, my mom and I
rented Heavenly Creatures the other night (Kate's first movie) and my mom
commented on how she kind of looks like Madonna. I just thought it funny when
I read your post--that someone else thought that, too.

I thought so, too, especially the scene where she's being sketched and
they switch from young Rose to old Rose ("it was the most erotic
moment of my life"). It looked almost as if they had faded from Kate
to Gillian Anderson, then to Gloria. Weird, eh?

bothered me for awhile. . .couldn't figure out who she looked like, but
definitely madonna.

I had never seen Kate Winslett before Titanic, and at the beginning
of the movie, she made me think of Madonna as she was a few years
ago, but then I was taken by the movie and she was and will be Rose
for a long time after this great, great movie...
btw, what has <GOD> to do with that ???

ain't it? :)

Actually when the camera closes in on her face during the sketching scene,
she looks exactly like Gillian Anderson.

I didn't notice it with Winslet as Rose, but in interviews where she's
herself, the resemblance is striking. Winslet is much prettier than
Madonna, but there's that same slight sneer in the mouth.
I thought that she looked like Russian ice dancer Marina Klimova,
particularly when running to the stern to jump.

I love that sneer in the mouth -- she's got a very unique mouth. I think
Kate could do great comedy, and would also be a great evil person (though
I guess she sort of did that already in Heavenly Creatures). I don't
think she's in any danger of the Bonham Carter syndrome.
I wonder when Kate will have her first lackluster performance? It happens
to the best of them!

Big difference. Kate Winslett can act.

But she cant dance (I wont say sing cos Madonna's singing ability is
open to debate). Anyway, though Madonna has generally been very weak in
acting she has had some moments but she should stick to singing. Kate
Winslett can act but nowhere near as good as many others.

I noticed the resemblance in SENSE & SENSIBILITY and again in TITANIC. Kate
looks a lot like Madonna and even has some of her personality characteristics,
like that real toughness. I'd like to see them play sisters in a movie.

I kind of expected to see this sort of reaction when I saw somebody
compared Kate Winslett to Madonna. Whether you like it or not though,
Madonna of ten years ago DID look pretty similair to Winslett. Think of
her in the "Like a Virgin" video, or shortly after. Madonna, queen
skank that she may be, was a very pretty lady.
Cool name Aladdin Sane, by the way. Do we have a Thin White Duke around
here?

I don't know. I personally can't stand this b___h who likes
to call herself an artist. After seeing 'Desperately Seeking
Susan', I don't think I've seen a flick with her in it, and I
don't want to. I've been thinking whether I should see 'Evita'
or not, all this time.
The role of Rose would make a lot of actresses stand out. But
if M had starred, I would've been dragging my feet to the theater
or couldn't help but think 'what if.' I would've thrown up had I
seen Molly Ringwald or Drew Barrymore on the bow with Di Caprio.
And after seeing Gwenneth Paltrow in 'Great Expectations', I'm so
thankful she turned down the offer for 'Titanic' because she had
other 'better' things to do. Though this woman is pretty and slim,
she just lacks something -- like charm or passion or something.
Maybe it's acting skills. I don't know her other movies are like
that.
But Kate Winslet's charm and passion are evident in her other
movies: Heavenly Creatures, Sense and Sensibility, Hamlet, and Jude
(her best acting yet). So much of the character Rose is revealed
not through words, but through looks and gestures. Winslet is not
just another pretty face in Hollywood with meager acting skills.
Undoubtedly, she's the best by far in her generation. But don't
take my word or the critics' word for it. Go rent her other movies
and draw your own conclusions.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks she resembles Madonna..at
least in Titanic she does...I've got mixed reactions when I made this
point on #titanic(EFNET, join us..Blatant advertisement)..
Rose(Kate) resembles Yvette from Upper Eastside New York City, as I
remarked to Justine on the first glance. If you happen to know Yvette,
You'll agree right away. Forget Madonna!

I think the confusion might be due to the coke-snorting scenes, which was
not on the North American prints but appeared in the special Colombian
edition. The scene where Cal collapses face down in a huge pile of
Bolivian is especially touching.

I agree. I really, really dislike that scene too, because it's obviously
digitized and it sort of pulled my focus. Up until then, I was so
engrossed, I had sort of forgotten I was watching a movie. That was like,
"Uh oh... bad computer call." But, I got back into it shortly thereafter.
I'm sure I'll see it again this weekend, and I'm going to try to be looking
at something else for that ten seconds.
Cheers,
Sarah
You're right. I thought about that when I first saw the movie but had
forgotten about it. I remember thinking about it, towards the
end of the movie, with the shot of Rose looking into the rain as the
camera descends from above. It almost looked like a music video with
Rose about to break out singing.
