Why was Rose given an American accent when Kate has such a beautiful British one?

There is nothing that gets to us American guys more than a
good-looking lady with a British accent!

Other examples include Jane Seymour, Sheena Easton, and Lara Croft!

Why couldn't Rose have been cast as a Brtitsh woman?

If the "upper-crust" character had been British, that would have, erm,
muddied the waters -- it would have made it a US/UK issue, when class
consciousness was every bit as prevalent in America.

It turned out to be a non-issue, as Winslet handled the accent perfectly.

I read that Rose was originally supposed to be British, but Kate talked
Cameron into changing her to an American because Kate felt she was getting a
reputation for being type cast as a British character. I personally am glad
that he made the switch.

Yes, she did wonderfully. I love on Rosie when she says, "When you
gotta go, you gotta go!" Cause she says it in an American accent. It's
cool to listen to her in an American accent when you know she has a
British one!

Do not forget that her character's family as well as most of first class
belonged to Philadelphia society....not England...so it makes sense that
she had an american accent. But I agree she does have a beautiful voice
(I know many people that were surprised when they heard an interview
with her anddiscovered she was british....)

Don't get me wrong, I loved the movie and Kate's stellar performance, but
she was no where near a Phili' accent. But Titanic was the first movie with
Kate that I saw and she sure did fool me into thinking she was American!

If you enjoy listening to Kate, buy her audio book of Sense &
Sensibility. It should be available anywhere audio books are sold.
The publisher is Highbridge, I think. The audio book is her reading a
fairly highly abridged version of the Jane Austen novel, not Emma
Thompson's screen adaptation but, it is quite enjoyable.

People in 1912 spoke a little differently then they do now. Not to
mention high society was more prim and proper. I really doubt they had
the same accents they do now. Accents evolve with the people

The original vision that Jim Cameron had for Titanic was for Rose to be
British - hence the original casting of Kate. However, Ms Winslet apparently
was worried about being sterotyped as an "English-only" actress, so
convinced Jim to let her play the part with an American accent. I read this
in a magazine interview with her.

FYI, Kate also mentioned that she was keen to play a part that would involve
her shaving all her hair and swearing. THAT could be interesting....hope
it's not a love story!! ;-)

It's a real shame. Kate Winslet's got a beautiful British accent and unfortunately, her American one was hideous and weird. James Cameron's fault I guess as he's not a linguist.

Not a cunning one, at least.
