I just saw Titanic for the 2nd time last night and enjoyed it much more
than the first time. Here's my question-----why did Rose decide to jump
off the ship??? Was there something cut out between?? First she's in the
dining room. Then she's running like a madwoman throught the ship. Her
hair is down, her necklace is gone. Something seems to be missing.
Perhaps a scene where she and Cal are arguing??? Does anyone have any
ideas??
Thanks,
Gina

Great eye, I saw the same thing both times I saw it. I wondered if there
happened to be a scene that had been cut too, or if that was just the way it
was written. Maybe Cameron thought we'd assume it was her life and where it was
headed that sent her running. In my opinion, I think the ship was symbolic of
her life, there she was on this ship with nowhere to go but down, everywhere
she would be Cal would be able to have a hold on her, and control her life. (as
well as her mother). Being around the high society people was just the last
straw and she couldnt take the predictible life she was leading no longer, thus
the running scene. Maybe she had spent the whole day pondering her life, and
felt she had no other way out?

Good question, I guess all we can do is....well..... guess.

Wouldnt it be wonderful for one day to be Cameron, Kate, or Leo and to know
what they know about the movie that we dont. Id especially like to be cameron
for one day just to know what first sparked his interest in this movie, what he
was thinking when writing the scenes, and to know the answers to questions
like.... was there something missing between the dinner party and the rose
running scene.

Yes, there was a cut scene. In fact, it is referred to early in the film
where Old Rose says, ". . .and it looks the same as it did the last time I
say it. . ." while looking at the hand mirror retrieved from her suite. The
mirror really was cracked, because in the cut scene you see Rose sitting in
front of her mirror (the same mirror she is sitting at when Cal presents the
necklace), still in her pristine Edwardian form taking her hair down. You
hear the dialog voice over of Old Rose, then you see young Rose smashing
things in her suite, cracking the mirror, tearing her necklace from her
neck, and then running out onto the deck. At first I believed that this
scene was probably cut for running time's sake, however, I have since read
that Cameron was not under any pressure to eliminate running time on the
film. This leads me to believe that maybe the scene was cut because it
changed Rose's image. It made her look as if she were violent, more of a
spoiled brat, if you will, throwing a temper tantrum.

Another scene that was cut, which is also still referenced in the film, is
the one were you find out the source of Jack's singing "Come Josephine,"
during the flying scene. Just after the third class dancing scene, you see
Jack and Rose walking on A deck, outside the first class entrance. Rose and
Jack wish on the stars, and sing "Come Josephine" together. It is the only
scene that, after reading it from the script, I wish would have been left in
the final cut. This scene shows the first signs that Rose is serious in her
thoughts toward Jack. The only reasoning I can find for this scene being
cut, other than for time's sake, is that perhaps Cameron's thought it showed
the affection between the young couple too soon. I am aware that the scene
was in fact shot because I have scene pictures of it at various TITANIC web
sites. If you haven't read the scene from the script, please take the time
to read it and tell me what you think about it.

i think that there are different titanic versions which are shown in
different countries, cause the first scene you describe isn't cut out here
in holland........you've described it exactly......though the second one is
also cut. i wonder why the movie is
released in different versions??

hmmmm.... That IS interesting. Does anyone know why this scene would not
have been cut from the film in Holland?

Read the script. There is a scene missing in which Rose walks, very
composed, back to her cabin. There she sits down at her vanity, takes down
her hair, and picks up her hand mirror. She flies into a rage over her
situtation and throw the mirror onto the vanity. That's how it got broken.
Then she runs out into the hall. Then you cut to the existing movie scene
of her running down the deck.

There is a scene missing there, but I'll bet its going to be included in the
director's cut. You can also read about it in the screenplay...there is a
copy of it at <A
