Did they hire a blind mastering engineer at Image, or what? "Saphead" is
almost unwatchable, in my opinion. There's terrible video burn (an after
image, somewhat like I used to get shooting movies off a wall 10 years
ago!), and an awful solarizing effect that turns a certain shade of dark
lighter than the surrounding values (bad video e.q.? What *is* this?). I
started in on "High Sign" and didn't notice the problem at all, so
hopefully it's confined to the first feature. Does this bug anyone else?
Can anyone explain what's wrong here?

I haven't seen the video version yet, so I don't know if I have seen the
effect you are talking about. I saw the film once at the Silent Movie
Theater in Los Angeles. Their print had a weird effect in it. It had
what I'll call a "burnt orange" coloring throughout the film. This might
have been what they called "toning" as opposed to "tinting" a film, but
I'm not sure. In any case, the only time I've seen the film, which was in
a theater, it had a strange look to it and was hard on the eyes.

The Saphead is also the only tinted film on the disc, which I assume has
something to do with your complaints. It looked great to me, though. At
least if it is bad, it's confined to the one you'll wtach the least!
