We're not about to run out of films, at least not in our lifetimes. Here is a
list of just the silent films (and there are probably a few part-talkies mixed
in) that exist in 35mm at Eastman House, Library of Congress, MOMA, Turner,
and UCLA and that have not been run anywhere in the recent past. This is
around 575 titles. This is *not* a complete list of archival holdings; I
simply did a search on the titles that I have not previously seen that exist
at one of the above 5 locations in 35mm. I'm sure that some of these titles
have probably been shown somewhere and I've missed them, but you get the idea.
Please don't post to say "Oh, ADAM'S RIB was run at the 1969 Cinecon." I
just did a quick data dump and haven't really even looked over the list in
detail, but I have missed precious few 35mm screenings of silents at Cinecon
and Cinefest during the past 25 years.
If we run 15 of these a year, it will take about 38 years to get through them
all. This doesn't include silent films at BFI, Munich, Amsterdam, or other
archives (where there are 100's more). This doesn't include any early
talkies. This doesn't include the titles that exist in 16mm (twice as big a
list). This doesn't include other titles that exist but I don't have an
archival holding listed for them. There is an even greater number of
1928-1933 sound films that have not shown up. Taken together, no one is going
to run out of material to run...and remember, these are just the ones I've not
seen. I've probably seen another 200-300 that haven't run at the major
festivals.
If anyone is looking for interesting titles to run at upcoming conventions,
here is my short list of 575. My long list, including early sound, 16mm
silents, some rare repeats I would like to see again, foreign holdings, etc.
would be about 2000 titles, which at 25 a year I will see all of by age 125.
I'm curious if others in this group would like to see any of these?

I would love to see any of them in 35mm (some of them for the second or
third time).
Following is a list of titles in your list I have seen or just barely
missed, with comments. A few I actually saw in 35mm, others in 16mm or
video. Several titles I am lucky enough to have my own prints of.
Carmen (1915-Fox version) -- does this actually exist?? If so, it is the
fourth of the two surviving Theda Bara films and I would dearly love
to see it. It should be a first choice for any future film convention.
Carmen (1915-Paramount) -- good Farrar, good DeMille, well worth
seeing in tinted 35mm, especially if it could be screened as a double
feature with the Theda Bara version.
Blue Jeans (1917) -- shown recently in Saginaw, very interesting, some
decomp.
Children of Eve (1915) -- shown in Sagainaw the year before I started
going. I'd really like to see it.
Girl of the Golden West (1915) -- a curiosity for DeMille fans, kind of
fun it its peculiar way and worth including in a CBDM reterospective
Warrens of Virginia (1915) -- disappointing for DeMille fans
After a Million (1924) -- entertaining if not spectacular B-studio
comedy. My very old 16mm print looks like a 35, so an original 35 should
be stunning.
Big Killing (1928) -- Shown at the Orlando Cinecon--great Beery-Hatton
comedy. Unfortunately at the time it was shown all the titles were on a
separate reel from the scenes, making it a bit difficult to follow.
Call of the North (1914) -- a real curiosity for DeMille fans. Only for
viewers into pre WWI features.
The Captive (1915) -- powerful, fascinating DeMille, strongly
reminiscent of "Barbed Wire" It was shown at either Saginaw, Syracuse
or a Cinecon in the past five years, I forget which.
Cleopatra (1912) -- talk about curiosities!! but I rather like this
crude early feature for the interesting screen presence of the forgotten
Helen Gardner, who also produced it for her own also forgotten studio
(and reissued it six years later to compete with Theda Bara's version).
Would be nice to see the original tints if they still exist.
Cricket on the Hearth (1923) -- leisurely paced but moderately
entertaining Dickins adaptation, looked fantastic in my 35mm Kodascope
before the flood. I think all the tints have washed off now. Blackhawk's
16mm (which I also have, flood damaged) is about two reels more complete
and easier to follow.
The First Auto (1927) -- OK nostalgia, pleasant but not outstanding
The Italian (1915) -- powerful Ince drama by Reginald Barker, shown in
16mm at TWO Cinecons (Minneapolis and Orlando) and in a stunning 35mm
restoration at Saginaw. Another title well-worth introducing to anyone
who thinks silents before 1920 were just too primitive to be effective
drama.
The Night Cry (1926) -- typical Rin-Tin-Tin, scheduled for next spring's
Columbus convention
Peck's Bad Boy (1921) -- fun Jackie Coogan, available on laser disc
Redskin (1928) -- shown at a Cinecon a year or two before I started
going and high time to be shown again, perhaps on the same program as
The Vanishing American.
The Road to Yesterday (1925) -- entertaining parallel-story DeMille.
I've only seen this on 8mm and would love to see it on 35 with a live
score.
Sally of the Sawdust (1925) -- interesting as early WC Fields and lesser
DW Griffith. Killiam has a beautiful 16mm
The Sea Hawk (1924) -- a much rougher, less sanitized version than the
Errol Flynn remake. Occasionally slow-paced, but quite spectacular and a
genuine epic.
The Spieler (1928) -- saw this years ago at John Hampton's Silent Movie.
OK carnival melodrama as I recall
Uncle Tom's Cabin (1928) -- shown at some Cinecon, I forget which, along
with Topsy & Eva, both of which were quite entertaining and well-made
adaptations of the classic story
The Pagan (1929) -- moderately interesting island romance with Vitaphone
singing (but is it really Novarro's voice?)
Sioux Blood (1929) -- shown a couple of weeks ago in Sagina. Gorgeous
print, mediocre B-western with MGM production values, disappointing Tim
McCoy with ambivalent if not antagonistic view towards American Indian
violence.
East Lynne (1916) -- shown in 16mm at the Cinecon a couple of years ago
(in the Cinegrill). Worth seeing for Theda Bara in an atypical non-vamp
(the antithesis, really) part. Difficult to get characters straight
unless you're familiar with the plot.
Excuse My Dust (1920) -- fun if not outstanding Wallace Reid
comedy-action film, shown at some convention not too long ago (or was it
at Moorhead State University?)
Just Pals (1920) -- I missed this when it was shown at a Cinecon and
would like the chance to see it again.
My Cousin (1918) -- This Enrico Caruso comedy was a flop when it came
out, but looked quite entertaining when shown at Syracuse (or was it a
Cinecon) a few years ago, despite being in tinting order with foreign
subtitles! When it is restored it should definitely be shown again.
One Exciting Night (1922) -- definitely a lesser Griffith, but one that
vividly illustrates that his innate racial attitudes were a continuing
insensitivity on his part even if not the deep-seated racism his critics
maintain.
Thanks for the interesting notes to my list. Yes, I was aware that some of
these were run at Saginaw. Every year they have 3-4 interesting titles, but
it's a bad time of year for me to be doing much traveling, and getting to
Saginaw from California is a bit problematic, but for those that can easily
make this, it sounds like an interesting convention.
I knew that a few of these titles had been previously run at Cinecons. REDSKIN
is very high on my want-to-see list and was run I think in 1972 or 73, the
year before my first Cinecon (and 25 years have passed anyway!). JUST PALS
was also run in 16mm at one of the 70's Cinecons and I recall having to miss
it for some reason (perhaps it was opposite something even more exciting...a
common problem at some of these events). And yes, THE ITALIAN is one of those
films that for some reason I just keep missing.
In addition to Cinecon, Syracuse, and Saginaw which have all been mentioned
frequently in this group, I would be remiss in not mentioning the Columbus
Cinevent which is just about as old a convention as Cinecon. I don't believe
Cinevent has ever run 35mm, but year after year they run many great silent and
early sound films (although they too have been drifting more and more into the
40's). My scheduling and family commitments make it tough for me to go to
this one now, but I also highly recommend this for anyone interested in this
era.
So I think my point was made. There were some titles on this large list that
have been shown elsewhere, but the vast majority have really not been seen
widely at all. And although things like SALLY OF THE SAWDUST and THE ROAD TO
YESTERDAY are "common" by most standards (I have never seen either!), I wonder
if anyone out there has seen them in any gauge other than video or 8mm.
When I have time I will post the companion lists: 16mm archival silents and
35mm archival early sound.
But what about those of us who have seen all of these - -
isn't there more...
** Very good point and I would be happy to see 10% of
those titles show up at cinecon/cinefest/etc... in the next
years....
