Well, Art, if you're limiting it to what was played at the Captiol,
there's still plenty of great films that played there that fall under
what we like to see. The Capitol played both STATE STREET SADIE and
THE MIDNIGHT TAXI-- two interesting films that Zanuck wrote at WB
under his pen name "Gregory Rogers." They're also both early Myrna
Loy films. Unfortunately, I don't know if either survives.
I'd recommend THE LAST WARNING which played the Capitol in '29, which
is FANTASTIC. It's "out there" on the bootleg market, but only in a
crummy, 6th gen dupe off of someone's 16mm.
With the ads for these films as your guide, perhaps you could do a
show featuring the exact same shorts, etc?
Here's hoping I can find some shorts that ran at the Capitol for my
Follies!

Hi, Jack,
Yes, we'd LOVE to run STATE STREET SADIE and/or THE MIDNIGHT TAXI--
does anybody know if these survive? (I have a feeling not.) THE LAST
WARNING would be ok even in 16mm for the Friday night show. Now all
we need to do is to locate a good 16mm print.
I should have mentioned that I'm in the process of compiling a
listing of what was shown at the Capitol, and I'm presently mid-way
through 1931. If anybody wants a copy of this list contact me
directly and I'll happily e-mail it to them.
The Midnight Taxi does exist and I believe a print is at the British
Film Institute.

Was it 35mm or 16mm?

I'm not sure that UCLA would be lending out their original for
projection purposes, though.
Doesn't this survive in 35mm? I think Universal or LoC would probably
have it.

THE LAST WARNING was run in 2004 at the Cinevent. I'm sure Steve
Haynes would remember the source of the print they ran (16mm).

Seriously, if "Mr Lemon of Orange" was at Capitolfest, I'd do
whatever I had to do just to attend. Commit atrocities, pawn my cats,
whatever.

How the heck do you pawn a cat?
(Answers dependent on "very carefully" will not be accepted.)

I have been trying to get Capitolfest to show Mr. Lemon for the past 2
years, but there is only a nitrate 35mm at UCLA. But seriously,
although "Mr. Lemon" is my "grail" film, I would love to see any of
the early Fox Brendels, like "Movietone Follies of 1930", "Disorderly
Conduct", "Handle With Care", "Olsen's Big Moment", and I would LOVE
to see a nice copy of "Happy Days".

I'd love to see any of those, too. You saw "Dangerous"? I'm jealous.
For some reason I thought "Movietone Follies of 1930" was available. Is
it lost like the 1929 Follies?
