I just finished reading BIG U: UNIVERSAL IN THE SILENT DAYS, and it got me
wondering which silent features from Universal still exist. I was hoping
that HELL MORGAN'S GIRL (1917) was still around, but I checked Jon Mirsalis'
Lon Chaney website and it is lost. DANTE'S INFERNO sure looked interesting
also.

Jon, is there any way that you could post a list of Universal silents that
are still around? I know that you may have done it a few years ago, but
deja.com only goes back to May 1999 now. Thanks...

There was a Universal 1917 version with Francis Ford and Grace Cunard.

I believe the film that has been identified in at least one book as "Dante's
Inferno" with Francis Ford and Grace Cunard is either a film that was never
released, or more likely the "inferno" sequence appeared in an episode of "The
Purple Mask" and was misidentified in the book.

I have this on video. A good fire and brimstone type film. I wish for this to
be on DVCD restored.

Have a nice day, :)

Wow, this is an amazing list, Jon! Thank you for posting this again for
everyone. 189 is a number
higher than you'd expect for Universal extant silents, but considering there
about FIVE TIMES as
many features released by them from in the silent era, it actually isn't
that many. And a good number here are incomplete or not exactly easy to
see. It is great that only a handful of Reginald
Dennys are missing, a lot of his films must've been distributed as Show @
Home prints. I'd like
to add at least two more features to the list of surviving Universals:

A Woman's Faith and Secrets of the Night (both 1925). I recall seeing these
in a rental catalogue
years ago. And Tornado should be put under the list of films that are
incomplete; the MOMA print
screened at Cinecon two years ago was missing at least one reel.

Once again, excellent job Jon!

You can add THE FEARLESS RIDER(1928) and BARNUM WAS RIGHT(1929) , those
I have in my collection. And there are quite a few more Blue Streak
Westerns that survive in European archives and private collections.

As a general rule I don't list films rumored to exist. I have also seen a
rental catalog from the 1970's with LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT listed. When I get
confirmation of a print, I'll list them.

Really? I played for it and have no recollection of it being cut. It
certainly seemed to have good continuity. Can someone else confirm this??

MOMA has a fragment of this. Gosfilmofond has material, but I don't know how
complete. It could be the same fragment MOMA has, but I haven't been able to
confirm this one way or another.

you may have a silent release version.

"Secrets of the Night" definitely exists. It's even on video! I have
a copy of the Grapevine tape.

Nope, it was a silent with a couple of talkie sequences and a movietone
score. It is way to visual a comedy to have been a silent version. And
if I were including silent versions of Universal talkies I have, I would
have included SENOR AMERICANO(1929) and DAMES AHOY(1930).

Oh yeah, you can also add odd reels of both HARD FISTS (1927) and
THUNDER RIDERS(1928) to the incomplete list.

Which begs a question. Are there any 'films' that have been transfered to
video without having film preservation elements made, with source
materials subsequently lost to deterioration or whatever?

When Ken Russell's MAHLER was being prepared for DVD release a couple of
years ago, the stereo soundtrack could not be located. The stereo sound had to
be pulled off an old VHS tape.

OK, thanks. I assume it is probably off a 16mm Show-at-Home, so I will assume
there is at least one 16mm print out there somewhere.

OK. LOC has material, but I don't know if they have the track or not.

Jon,

A Society Sensation (1918) isn’t on your Universal list. Grapevine has a
cut-down versions for which they give the wrong year, but it’s definitely the
same film. It's on their tape with Moran of the Lady Letty.

Yes. When we booked this from MoMA, Anne Morra warned us that a middle
reel was in fact lost. Given that the story portions of the movie
weren't all that exciting, anyway, it's no surprise that it wasn't that
detectable. This is not a unique situation: I saw THE CRADLE
SNATCHERS--a very plot-driven comedy--at Pordenone with roughly two
reels of footage missing, yet I couldn't for the life of me tell you
where they might have fit in.

A similar situation happened to me when I was at Paramount. Someone
opened up a closet and found a virtually mint 70mm print of IN HARM'S
WAY, which I happily appropriated and put into service. A couple of
years later, I got a call from Michael Hickey asking if I still had it.
It turns out that they were readying it for video, and the original mags
were lost (also the case on several other titles, including ON A CLEAR
DAY...); that 70mm print was the sole surviving record of the film's
original stereo. The tracks were dutifully copied, and the stereo was
preserved. (Same thing recently happened here at Columbia with THE MAN
FROM LARAMIE; the stereo was taken from a survivng 4-track mag print.)
On a side note, when I recently met Kirk Douglas, I related the story (I
just happened to have a lobby card from the film with me), and he signed
it, "To Mike--who saved it!" Very cool.

Also there's the stereo sound for MASTER OF THE WORLD and the last reel of
THE TINGLER, rescued from a collector's mag stereo prints.
