I was playing the masochistic tango and checking out what exhibits and films
are set for August at the National Portrait Gallery in DC (my *favorite*

Here are some films of interest, off the above website:

Films in August--

08/03/98 @ 12:30p: Dear Mr. Gable (1968). Using interviews with friends and
co-workers and clips from his Hollywood classics, this documentary looks at
the career of Clark Gable. (52 minutes).

08/04/98 @ 12:30p: Harlow: The Blond Bombshell (1993). Sharon Stone hosts
this documentary about Jean Harlow, the platinum blonde whose meteoric career
was cut short by her untimely death at age twenty-six. (47 minutes).

08/10/98 @ 12:30p: W. C. Fields's Diamond Anniversary (1990). This
documentary uses film clips and rare home movies to celebrate the
seventy-fifth anniversary of the release of comic W. C. Fields's first film.
(60 minutes).

08/11/98 @ 12:30p: This Is Your Life: Laurel and Hardy (1954) and Laurel and
Hardy: Rare Home Movies. The first film recaps the lives and careers of the
comedy duo, while the second, a silent film, includes a rare look at Stan
Laurel's native village of Tynemouth, England. (55 minutes combined).

08/17/98 @ 12:30p: The Story of Will Rogers (1961). Bob Hope narrates this
look at the life and career of Will Rogers, one of America's best-loved
humorists, from his Oklahoma roots to his death in an airplane crash in
Alaska. (55 minutes).

08/24/98 @ 12:30p: Katharine Hepburn (1990). Highlights the cinematic triumphs
of one of Hollywood's quintessential stars. (30 minutes).

08/25/98 @ 12:30p: The Ten-Year Lunch (1987). Producer/director Aviva Slesin's
Academy Award-winning salute to the denizens of the legendary Algonquin Round
Table, including Dorothy Parker, Alexander Woollcott, Edna Ferber, George S.
Kaufman, and Robert Benchley. (50 minutes).

08/31/98 @ 12:30p: Bette Davis: If Looks Could Kill (1994). An A&E biography
documenting Bette Davis's determined rise to prominence in an industry
dominated by men. (50 minutes).
