As one of you pointed out a while back, Jeffrey Vance claims in his new
book, HAROLD LLOYD: MASTER COMEDIAN, that Harold had an affair with Jobyna
Ralston. Vance says, however, much more than this--that Harold was a
"ladies' man" who was involved in multiple extramarital affairs. This was
particularly true with the nude models he was photographing with his 3D
camera. Mildren knew about this, and endured it. Still, Vance concludes, the
marriage was a stable (I think he used the word "stable" or a synonym of it)
one by Hollywood standards.

This is hard to dispute, given the fact that Suzanne Lloyd co-authors this
book with Vance. But does anyone have any information which might either
substantiate this claim further or caste doubt upon it?

As everyone knows, Harold maintained a squeaky-clean image during his
lifetime, and this image survives even after this death. As a fan, I would
still like to believe that the image is the truth. As I recall, even
Annette D'Agostino (Lloyd) did not know about the affairs when I
communicated with her about Harold.

This reminded me of something I hadn't thought about in years.

IIRC, in Hollywood Babylon ll Kenneth Anger ran a picture of Lloyd with this
caption:

"Harold Lloyd -- star with the most illegitimate children."

Any comments?!

Not that it's any of my business to speculate about people's private lives, but
since Harold was apparently seriously involved with Bebe Daniels and married his
next leading lady Mildred makes me suspect that he might have had difficulty in
maintaining a purely professional relationship with his character's "love
interest." So if he were interested in Jobyna or others, i wouldn't find it
particularly surprising.

Wasn't that a pattern with William S. Hart, too?

Kenneth Anger hardly rates highly on a list of reliable sources.

*******
Two biographies on Lloyd:
- Richard Schickel; HAROLD LLOYD: THE SHAPE OF LAUGHTER (1971)
- Tom Dardis; HAROLD LLOYD: THE MAN ON THE CLOCK (1983)
describe this other side of Lloyd.

Oh next you're going to say he was just kidding when his section of
(implied) couples starts with Cary Grant and Randolph Scott, continues
through the Mauch twins-- and ends with Edgar Bergen and Charlie
McCarthy.

I've seen pictures of Charlie sitting on Edgar's lap.

ROBERT OSBOURNE: Hi, I'm Robert Osbourne and we're continuing with our
month-long tribute to Harold Lloyd. Up next, we have a picture that
hasn't been seen since its first release, fifty-six years ago, "The
Sin of Harold Diddlebock." With me to discuss the film is one of the
many nude models that Harold Lloyd slept with.

NUDE MODEL: [bubbly blonde] Hi!

ROBERT OSBOURNE: Tell us a little bit about sleeping with Harold.

NUDE MODEL: Well, he was insatiable. You know, he had a lot of energy
and he tried to keep busy with all those hobbies of his but, well...
You can only play so much handball, if you know what I mean.

ROBERT OSBOURNE: So I take it he was an enjoyable partner?

NUDE MODEL: Well, no, not really. They didn't call him "Speedy" for
nothing.

ROBERT OSBOURNE: Were you bothered at all by the fact that he only had
half of a hand?

NUDE MODEL: Oh, no, that was no big deal. It was his other deformity
that was kind of troubling.

ROBERT OSBOURNE: His other deformity?

NUDE MODEL: Well, I guess a lot of people didn't know this but Harold
only had half of, um, his thing.

ROBERT OSBOURNE: [confused] His thing?

NUDE MODEL: Yeah, you know. [points to her lap] His thing.

ROBERT OSBOURNE: [stunned] You mean--?

NUDE MODEL: [matter-of-fact] Oh, yeah. Kind of disturbing the first
time you saw it but, after a while, it sort of grew on you. It was
sooooo cute. He even had a funny nickname for it -- he called it
"Snub."

ROBERT OSBOURNE: [begins to look woozy] "Snub"? ... Well, it's - it's
certainly not noticeable in - in the films.

NUDE MODEL: No, you really have to be watching for it. As I understand
it, he went to see Sam Goldwyn who knew how to make gloves and got a
glove to disguise his hand. But Sam Goldwyn also knew how to make
hats. So he made a teeny little hat to cover his, uh, you know,
"Snub."

ROBERT OSBOURNE: [turning green] Really?

NUDE MODEL: It was adorable. It was red and had a little tassle, just
like a Shriner's hat.

ROBERT OSBOURNE: [clutching his armchair unsteadily] Oh?

NUDE MODEL: He also had a spare one with little red and green light
bulbs on top. He liked to wear that at Christmastime. Harold was
totally into Christmas.

ROBERT OSBOURNE: [trying to wrap it up quickly] Well, let's take a
look, shall we? Here, from 1947, with Harold Lloyd and Jackie the Lion
...

NUDE MODEL: Did I mention he was also boinking Jackie?

ROBERT OSBOURNE: ... "The Snub of Harold Diddlebock" -- I mean, "The
Sin"! -- "The Sin of Harold Diddlebock"!

Very funny! Next time I'll ask some questions about Lloyd's comedic style

Reliable sources inform me that Dwight Frippery is Kenneth
Anger's love child.

SITTING, you say. Well, as long as Charlie wasnt DANCING,
there was probably nothing salacious going on.

I've always heard so, but i don't think i've seen names named of other leading
ladies allegedly proposed to except for Winifred Westover, who unfortunately
took him up on the offer. That marriage made him a lot of enemies amongst
Winifred's friends (and prompted some rude comments from Peg Talmadge). Don't
know if he kept up his proposing habit afterwards but he sure didn't have any
more takers.
