<This
makes me wonder if any of Marion Davies'films are 'lost'? I would like
to know how many of her silent films still exist. Is it possible that
all of them have been preserved?! It seems that all of her sound films
are in existence. Am I being too optimistic?>
I know of the following silents being extant
ENCHANTMENT-1921-
BEAUTY'S WORTH-1922
WHEN KNIGHTHOOD WAS IN FLOWER-1922
LITTLE OLD NEW YORK-1923
YOLANDA-1924
JANICE MEREDITH-1924
LIGHTS OF OLD BROADWAY-1925
ZANDER THE GREAT-1925
BEVERLY OF GRAUSTARK-1926
THE RED MILL-1927
TILLIE THE TOILER-1927
THE FAIR COED-1927
QUALITY STREET-1927
THE PATSY-1928
HER CARDBOARD LOVER-1928
SHOW PEOPLE-1928
MARIANNE-1929 (silent version)
All of her talkies are extant and have run on TCM at one time or another
(except IT'S A WISE CHILD-1931 which I don't believe they've ever run for some
reason).

Cable & theatrical screenings of "IT'S A WISE CHILD" are all but impossible
owing to the double whammy of both copyright litigation by the estate of the
author of the play the film is based upon and, more dramatically, the loss of
one reel of the film.
A great pity! I was fortunate enough to screen the existing material for "IT'S
A WISE CHILD" at UCLA, and it's one of Davies' brightest 30's films with an
increasingly rare (by then) slapstick sequence involving Davies' purchase of a
new automobile, which she reduces to wreckage within a few minutes! Then too,
the film contains an interesting performance by doomed actress Marie Prevost.
Lastly, to the list of existing silent films, I suppose you can add "THE FIVE
O'CLOCK GIRL" (1928), which while never released, exists in a more or less
complete --- albeit rough --- format.

Greetings!
I thought all of the messages were current until I noticed the dates
of many going back to 1996. I have found "Friends of Marion" and I was
told that all of her films released through MGM are in existence.
Marion Davies' films have survived far better than Colleen Moore's
films and Clara Bow's films. Need I even mention what is left from the
career of Theda Bara?! I think not. The documentary, "Captured on
Film: The True Story of Marion Davies" which includes "Quality Street"
(1927) will be a real gift for delving into her career. Marion had
star quality--she was genuine as a person and worked hard at her
craft. ChaneyFan, I probably would like some of the films you
mentioned that were awful. Sometimes awful films can be enjoyable just
because the performance of the star. The Hearst family would have no
part of this new documentary whatsoever. They have brushed Marion
Davies under the carpet. Her own memoirs, "The Times We Had", is a
truly wonderful read. There is where one can find the real Marion.
There was no haughtiness about her. Thus, her screen performances were
also genuine. It is wonderful that the majority of her films still
exist. I'd love to see "The Red Mill", "Tillie the Toiler", "Blondie
of the Follies" and so many others. She was brilliant.
Dennis.
I believe this is lost.

Runaway Romany(1917) LOST
The Burden of Proof(1918) LOST
Cecilia of the Pink Roses(1918) LOST
The Belle of New York(1919) LOC has incomplete print
Getting Mary Married(1919) LOC has incomplete print
The Cinema Murder(1919) LOST
The Dark Star(1919) LOST
The Restless Sex(1920) LOC has incomplete print. Gosfilmofond in Moscow also
has material, but don't know if it's complete. (Earl: Here's a good LOC joint
archive collaboration for you!)
The Bride's Play(1921) LOC has, presumably complete
Buried Treasure(1921) LOC has incomplete print
The Young Diana(1922) LOST
It's interesting that LOC has so many of these incomplete. I wonder if these
all came in a single package in bad condition?

Yeesh! Please keep care of yourself. That's not fun.

I keep thinking I've seen part of this somewhere before. Am I
hallucinating?

You know, when I saw this on the list I said, "Oh, I know that survives," but I
show no archival holding and no record that I've seen any of it, so maybe we
both saw it at a Cinecon that time we got sucked into an alternate universe.
I suppose in that universe there is a remote possiblity that either or both of
you stumbled upon an existing copy of the book "The Young Diana: An Experiment
of the Future" by Marie Corelli and that registered as the film existing.
Actually, I bring this up cuz I found the Corelli's story to be one of the best
from the "rejuvenation" craze of films in the early part of the last century.
It's a shame the film is gone.
