At first I thought your subject line had a typo and it was Movieland
1934. Certainly there are more stars from the early talkie era
represented than from the 1950s. The only giveaways are the presences
of Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield. Its great that Hirschfeld
remembered Harry Langdon a decade after his death. And its odd that he
would choose to portray W.C. Fields (if that is him with a bottle) with
a clip-on mustache, something he abandoned after 1931. Hirschfeld
probably had a visual memory of Fields from his silent or Broadway
days.

Okay, if that is Fields, then 53!

A1 might be Stepn' Fetchitt

B1 is Adolph Menjou

Looks more like Colleen Moore to me than Normand

I think that's ZaSu Pitts, not Oliver, M1 is Gloria Swanson.

BONUS QUESTION- How many NINA's and where?
(the resolution might make that tricky, if not impossible)

***SPOILERS AHEAD***

I'm cheating because I have a key in front of me. It was published in a
book of Hirschfeld's work. So if you don't want to know the answers to
some of the trickier ones, read no further.

Personally, I think Hirschfeld failed to capture some of these people
adequately but that's an occupational hazard of the caricaturist,
especially when attempting an ambitious piece like this.

A1 - Yassuh, dat's s'posed t' be Stepin Fetchit; A2 - Yes, that's
supposed to be Myrna Loy; A3 and A4 - Supposed to be Vivien Leigh and
Laurence Olivier.

> B. TOP TABLE FAR LEFT

B1 - Adolphe Menjou.

C - Warner Oland as Charlie Chan; not Lionel Barrymore, it's supposed
to be Lon Chaney; Yes, that's Charles Laughton as Captain Kidd, a role
with which he was closely identified at the time (see, for example,
Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd).

> D. BETWEEN MIDDLE & LOWER TABLES FAR LEFT
>
> Zsa Zsa Gabor, Rudolph Valentino, Olivia deHavilland

D - Supposed to be Jean Harlow, Valentino, and Bette Davis.

> E. LOWER TABLE FAR LEFT
>
> Rita Hayworth?, Theda Bara?, Marlene Dietrich, Vivian Leigh, Mae West

E - Rita Hayworth and Theda Bara, yes; Vivien Leigh, no -- it's
supposed to be Hedy Lamarr.

> F. TOP TABLE LEFT
>
> Raimu?, Michel Simon, Unknown #F1, Unknown #F2

F - At the International Table: Raimu; Michel Simon; Gina Lollobrigida;
Gèrard Philipe.

> G. BETWEEN TOP & MIDDLE TABLE LEFT
>
> Unknown #G1, Charles Boyer, Fernandel, Unknown #G2

G1 - Louis Jouvet; G2 - Michele Morgan.

> H. MIDDLE TABLE LEFT
>
> Unknown #G2, Leslie Howard, Anna Magnani, Maurice Chevalier

H - The unknown is supposed to be Jean Gabin. It's not Leslie Howard
but Alec Guinness, although, to me, it looks more like Conrad Nagel.

I, J, K - all correct.

> L. BETWEEN MIDDLE AND LOWER TABLES RIGHT
>
> Harold Lloyd, Mabel Normand?, Ben Turpin

L - Not Mabel Normand, supposed to be Clara Bow.

> M. LOWER TABLE RIGHT
>
> Edna May Oliver, Lillian Gish, Unknown #M1, Mary Pickford, Douglas
> Fairbanks, Katharine Hepburn, Shirley Temple, Mary Astor?

M - Not Zasu Pitts or Edna May Oliver but Lillian Gish, next to her is
sister Dorothy Gish; M1 is Gloria Swanson; not Mary Astor but Norma
Shearer.

> N. TOP TABLE FAR RIGHT
>
> Wallace Beery, Marie Dressler, Unknown #N1, George Arliss

N1 - Supposed to be Orson Welles.

> O. BETWEEN TOP AND BOTTOM TABLES FAR RIGHT

O - All correct.

> P. LOWER TABLE FAR RIGHT
>
> William S. Hart, Sophia Loren, Johnny Weissmuller

P - Not Sophia Loren and Johnny Weismuller, supposed to be Ingrid
Bergman as Joan of Arc and Gary Cooper.

> That's 62 if I'm right in every case, though I'm sure I'm not.

You correctly identified 52 (grading leniently by counting your correct
guesses).

> Interesting omissions: Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, Henry Fonda,

Yeah, quite a few leading men got slighted. Cary Grant, James Cagney
and Jimmy Stewart, for example. Maybe they're all waiting for a table.

You left off Karloff (above Lugosi). I thought the Welles was Cagney! I got
all but five or so. It's great he did Garbo >alone<.

#A1 is Stepin Fetchit.

It's Warner Oland as Chan. I'm fairly sure it's Laughton as Capt. Kidd.
Could #C1 be Fredric March a la Mr. Hyde? (Looks a little like Ned Sparks,
to me, too, but that's not likely.)

Doesn't look like Gabor or de Havilland to me. More like Marilyn Miller and
Bette Davis.

I think you're right about Hayworth, Bara, Dietrich, and West, but I think
that's Hedy Lamarr, not Vivien Leigh.

#F1 possibly Simone Simon? #F2 Jean Marais?

Presuming that's Leslie Howard (doesn't look much like him to me, beyond the
pipe and blond hair), could that be Kenneth More to his left? (#G2)

I think that's ZaSu Pitts, not Edna May Oliver. I don't think it's Gish,
either, though that's closer than I can guess. #M1 is Gloria Swanson, I'd
bet.

I don't think that's Loren (more likely Ingrid Bergman, given the
Joan-of-Arc type armor), and it's definitely Gary Cooper, not Weissmuller.

I don't think anyone mentioned Boris Karloff, standing behind Lugosi.

Weird that kind of cocky look with the cigar, though.

Totally looks like Gabor, much less like Harlow who it's supposed to be
be. Apparently the latter is Davis, though I wasn't sure-- the
Crawford one kind of looks like Davis too.

Supposed to be Jean Gabin, doesn't even remotely look like him. My
other guess was Victor McLaglen.

I thought Cooper at first but the long hair was weird, that made me
think Weissmuller. Isn't there some Warner Bros. celebrity cartoon
where he also has long hair (and was similarly hard to place, now that
I think of it?) Did he grow his hair out between pictures, just to be
weird? What's up with that?

> I don't think anyone mentioned Boris Karloff, standing behind Lugosi.

I just missed him in my tally, him I recognized!
