Stella Dallas
Series: Golden Silents [2009]
Director: Henry King, Country: USA, Release: 1925, Runtime: 120
Olive Higgins Prouty’s celebrated novel was most famously adapted for
the big screen by King Vidor, in the Barbara Stanwyck weepie of 1937.
But this original, classically elegant silent version is by many
accounts an even greater film. Belle Bennett stars in an
unforgettable, heart-wrenching title performance, as an ambitious
woman who marries above her station but must give up everything for
the happiness of her daughter. The finale is one of the most moving
sequences in cinema history. A reception will follow the performance.

With live piano accompaniment by Stephen Horne, one of the U.K.’s
leading silent film accompanists. Horne is based at London's National
Film Theatre, and has played at prominent U.K. venues including the
Barbican Centre and Tate Modern. He regularly performs
internationally, including accompanying The Film Society’s screening
of A Cottage on Dartmoor in 2006.
