The new VCI DVD 2-disc special edition of my fave Mascot serial, THE
PHANTOM EMPIRE, is in my hot little hands. Even beside the fact that I
contributed written material as bonuses, it's a stunningly beautiful
restoration, exceeding anything I could've expected. I'm more proud of
this than any other DVD to which I've contributed. I have more info
and screen grabs up at http://www.inthebalcony.com/cliffhanger/

I should also like to make the unrelated observation that 'The Phantom
Empire' is the title of perhaps the best, most beautifully written (by
Geoffrey O'Brien) book on Cinema ever published.

Yeah, it's a great book about movies as a popular art form and it
covers all kinds of genres that thrived at neighborhood theaters, e.g.
Italian "peplum," that never got much critical respect, even though
they excited kids in the audience, including many future filmmakers/
film buffs.

I must agree. I just received this set and I am now watching it. I have two
other versions of it and this really is a big improvement over
those...though it is not perfect. The picture is greatly improved, and the
audio is much better on this version.

I read recently (while doing research on this DVD version) that the estate
of Gene Autry *may* have a quality print of this terrific serial...that some
negotiations are going on to gain access to it. I think I read this at
http://monsterkidclassichorrorforum.yuku.com/bmonsterkidclassichorrorforum
or possibly http://www.serialsquadron.com/

I saw this serial as a kid and never forgot it. I am now, for the first
time, investigating other serials...Undersea Kingdom, Flash Gordon, Phantom
Creeps...etc.

EXCELLENT!!!

I loved it too - when I was six years old. I have to agree with the person
who would prefer a good DVD of 'Daredevils of the Red Circle.

Not surprising in either case. Unless it's the first edition of some
legendary (in those circles) tome that's been out-of-print for a few
decades, you'll find that most film-related books can be had for a
song eventually. For most publishers, I daresay that Cinema titles are
at best a loss leader; the kind of thing you have in the catalogue to
demonstrate a committment to diversity of subject matter.

On the whole, you can't make a nickel writing about film.

Just a non-commercial "plug" for Alibris - an alternative to Amazon. I
have been using Alibris
for about six years and never a problem. About a year ago, I started
searching for rare films
on Alibris and have been pleasantly surprised - sometimes my other
search engines turn up
nothing - but some one on Alibris will have the film - and at the
correct price. Worth a look
either for film or books.

I completely agree. Alibris offers a great service, especially for out
of print books. I've bought a lot of great old books through them and
always had wonderful service. I've even written a couple of first
reviews for them, at their request.

Then there's the professor of a strangely under-subscribed course on
Mime. Not a soul attended his first lecture.

Hollywood Babylon had a sequel, at least. But that's less film than
gossip. How about City of Nets?

Uhhh . . . yeah, well, maybe. But you can't rake in the greenbacks
writing about 'le Cinema' the way, uhhhhh, John Grisham does writing
about . . . whatever it is he writes about.

So there!

Like all such enterprises, though, only as good as what sellers put in.
As a result of a recent discussion on re.arts.tv about the new Saint
series, I did a search on "Saint's Getaway." Found a "first edition"
dated 1933 with Roger Moore on the cover.

Was this DVD mastered from 16mm?

If so, do any 35mm elements exist on this title?

I don't know about the source for this restoration, but the Gene Autry
estate is supposed to have a pristine copy of the film. I got that from here
