Saw GONY last night.

I've been looking forward to it for a long time. That goes without
saying on this forum, right?

Now, why in the hell did Scorsese make the initial fight scene into a
goddamn MTV video? Complete with electro club beat background music?
What_in_the_fuck was he thinking? The rest of the film is free and
clear of this BS. It stands out like the proverbial turd in the
punchbowl.

This seems to be the de riguer flaw of all halfway decent movies of
recent manufacture. Somehow, somewhere, somebody has to insert some
silly ass Eurofaggy "music" into the soundtrack. What is the
compulsion? I just don't understand. Unless and until the world
evolves into a grand discotheque, this sort of questionable flourish
is not bound to age well with time.

It stuck in my craw the whole way through. Even during the rat-baiting
scene (thank God someone has brought this sort of spectacle to the
screen! There is a fantastic book on 19th century NYC, I believe it's
called "Lowlife," that describes this entertainment and how the
average cost of admission to such an event was fairly steep relative
to other contemporary popular forms of entertainment).

I liked the scene itself; but yea. What the hell was up with that music?! I
even like some techno, but part of the point of GONY was to take a trip back in
time. Think of how great the scene would have been with some bitter, mournful
Irish or old American death song accompanied by maybe a harp or violin.
Fortunately, this was just about the film's only flaw. Everything else was
great.

I'll back you up here. I actually think this is the *best* movie I've seen all
year (still plenty of December releases are yet to hit my area, of course), but
yeah -- I noticed that music right off the bat and it stuck out like a sore
thumb. Then I thought about it awhile, and he's never really cut an action
scene on that scale (or of any scale, for awhile), so maybe he was just looking
to crib Michael Bay or whomever to get ideas? Ironic that someone can film a
boxing fight as brutally effective in Raging Bull, but 20 years later, have not
a clue how to cut or stage a brutal gang battle. Ah well, the movie is
fantastic!

Peter Gabriel makes silly Eurofaggy "music?" Clean out your ears. I think

I think of how predictable, manipulative, cliche, trite and overly
sentimentalized it would be. That's the music Spielberg would use... with
some little boys choir going "oooooh--ahh--ahh---ooohh ahhh."

That entire sequence is meant to establish the NY of that era as seeming
rather exotic, strange, harsh and alien to our conception of it today --
that's the point. Thus the exotic, strange, harsh and alien music.

And comparing that mighty Peter Gabriel number to Britney or NSync as an
earlier poster did is beyond ignorant.

The mind boggles. Do you really think Martin is taking influence from
Michael Bay? If this were the case, I guarantee that some drippy,
sentimental faux Irish music would be in the background and there would be a
lot more slow-motion sequences of the combatants walking toward the camera
etc. etc. (insert Michael Bay cliche here). There would not be some of the
shocking, abrupt jump-cuts and eye-popping compositions etc. etc.

In neither the cutting nor the music does this sequence resemble Michael
Bay's fundamental and religious adherence to the puerile continuity editing
and oversimplification of action.

How can you say that that amaziong sequence, in which from the camera angles
to the cutting we are taking the point of view of the child, is poorly
edited? There had to be at least 30 setups to get all that coverage and to
edit it together into such a brief, brutal, overwhelming explosion of
concentrated violence is a job only Marty and Thelma could do. Michael Bay,
give me a break.

It's amazing how people can miss the point.

I see that you go for deep, in-depth critical analysis. Ah, the
brilliance of the Canadian mind.

I went to see it a second time. Sorry, Charlie, the movie has some big
flaws.

Want a masterpiece? See Taxi Driver. Observe how the relationship
between DeNiro and Cybil Shepherd amplifies the depth of the Bickle
character. Or the relationship with Foster, for that matter. It's
downright crucial, for that matter. It is difficult to think of films
that milk the male-female dynamic with such great success.

Diaz is nothing but window dressing in GONY! I'm not faulting her, but
she adds nothing to Cutter or Vallon. Nada! Zip!

Another big flaw is the way that the mise en scene of 19th century NY
is established much like a museum. When you tour a museum, naturally,
you stroll from exhibit to exhibit, one at a time, viewing each in
isolation. That is the way that GONY proceeds. Here we have immigrants
being harassed. He we have transvestites. Here we have pickpockets.
The background noise, so to speak, did not have the same volume
throughout. I expect Marty to be more seamless than that.

Mr. Day-Lewis was utterly outstanding. He deserved a better vehicle.

Now, why don't YOU shut the fuck up, Canadian motard, and try to learn
a few manners?

Sure, that would have been a danger in selecting the music. But a lot of
authentic folk and traditional ethnic stuff is very dark and sad without being
the least bit sentimental. I had no idea that opening music was Peter Gabriel
until I read that it was. I like his work a lot, but that piece just sounded
like a simplistic, throbbing beat from a run of the mill suburban nightclub.
Nothing like Gabriel's lovely work on the Last Temptation of Christ, for
example; where he really got into the musical traditions and intricate rythms
of the Middle East and blended novel sounds together to make something both
unique and seemingly authentic. Maybe the best thing would have been no music.
Just the noise of the battle.

You must have missed what I think is the most memorable
scene in the film when Vallon wakes up to find Cutting (not
Cutter) watching him in bed with Everdeane.

How old was Everdeane when Cutting took her up?
What is Vallon's central conflict with Cutting?

Think "Daddy".

No, I do not. 'Twas hyperbole, or exaggeration utilized to underline my point.

Michael Bay uses sentimental faux Irish music in his movies? Really??! So far,
the scores for most of his movies have been hip-hop/r&b ("Bad Boys") or generic
contemporary action themes ("The Rock," "Armageddon"). Hans Zimmer's score for
"Pearl Harbor" is a corny, pretentious way to attempt to underline action, so
maybe that's what you're referring to. Either way, the point is moot as I'm
referring more to the shooting and cutting of the film, than the scoring of it.

>There would not be some of the
>shocking, abrupt jump-cuts and eye-popping compositions etc. etc.

Are you kidding me???? Now the mind boggles, and it's mine. Michael Bay's
movies are all about gratuitous abrupt jump-cutting in order to "raise the
blood pressure, "get those veins pumping," and (insert lame action tagline of
choice here). There is a plethora of beautifully composed shots in GoNY, but I
don't think I saw a single one in the muddled opening gang fight. And another
Michael Bay comparison, Scorsese messes around a *lot* with the shutter speed
in this movie (speeding up action, slowing it down). I guess this is a bad
example because he uses a helluva lot of slo-mo quite effectively in Taxi
Driver, but once again I will reitirate here that he just seemed a bit confused
by how to stage this massive brawl so he just sort of utlized the kitchen sink
routine and it really didn't work for me.

>In neither the cutting nor the music does this sequence resemble Michael
>Bay's fundamental and religious adherence to the puerile continuity editing

Bay does not have an adherence, let alone one with religious affiliation, to
continuity at all!! As for oversimplification of action, after watching one of
his movies, you really can't tell what actually happened, so I would call it
more like a non-simplification of action!

>How can you say that that amaziong sequence, in which from the camera angles

I'm not denying the fact that it took a lot of hard work, blood, sweat, tears,
etc, etc. to set up. All I am saying in the end, is that it did not work for
me. Perhaps this is more Thelma's fault than Marty's, but in the end, the
director should be over the editor's shoulder approving final cut (barring
Weinstein influence, of course). This sequence, in my humble opinion, fell
flat on its face.

The fact that the film succeeds magnificently on almost every other level makes
this drawback all the more lucid to me in retrospect.

Cheers

Minor quibble, but while Leo was already the choice when they decided
to do this film, Cameron Diaz still had to audition for her role, so
it wasn't necessarily the case of "get the two big stars or we won't
finance it" (supposedly Cameron got the part because Martin thought
she and Leo clicked together during the audition).
