Just read the review and they said there is a funny joke in the new AP movie
involving Godzilla. I cant see the movie until Monday, anyone catch what it
was?

Austin Powers, his father, and Foxxy are giving chase to Goldmember in a
mini, and they crash into the base of a float of a giant monster so that the
float moves with the car. The Japanese people expectedly flee and one yells
"Run! It's Godzilla!" Then another Japanese person says something about
international copyright law preventing them from using Godzilla and that it
only looks like Godzilla. Then the first guy says they should run
nevertheless. I though it was a really funny joke.

Sure it was...and it only feeds the audience's belief that Godzilla cannot be
taken seriously.

I just don't see it that way. I haven't seen this movie yet, however I
remember laughing uproariously at the hokey kaiju sequence at the end of
"Pee Wee's Big Adventure". It was (and is) funny.

This Austin Powers joke sounds remarkably sophisticated and "in". I wonder
if the writer was aware of Toho's increased copyright defense activity?

Except for the 1st movie, was Godzilla ever taken seriously?

I got a big kick out of the Godzilla insert/joke in "Mars Attacks" as
well. Same director, you know ...

Except its a not Mini...

You see, BMW pulled the same stunt that Emmerich and Devlin did - they took
a decades old and much loved icon, "celebrated" its antiquity (?) and then
attempted to do a makeover for a more "modern audience" by ditching
everything that made the original popular and marketing their own creation
by just using a famous name.

The BMW MINI (as it is spelt) share no common parts with the original Mini,
is bigger, taller, longer and has gone from being a small cheap car to a
high-priced hatchback (the Mini was never even a hatchback!).

In fact, we even call them MINOs over here - Mini's In Name Only.

:-)

I read back in 94 of a rumour that Burton was to direct the Hollywood
Godzilla with ILM doing the FX.

Ah, the dream team...

Jesus? I thought his name was Legion?
But i agree, lighten up. At least the audience got the joke. Sound much
funnier than Speilberg's "joke" about Godzilla in Lost World.

He did ... and he also directed Pee Wee's Big Adventure, which was the
reference I was going off of. Maybe you thought I meant the director of
the Austin Powers film?

Exactly. I love Godzilla films, but high art they AIN'T. Shit... even
Picasso, Da Vinci, Beethoven, etc get made fun of.
