Apparently in some shots he is walking on a treadmill in London, against
some kind of projected image of NYC. I forget where I read this, I think it
was on an excellent webpage linked here a while ago that had a detailed
interview with the cinematographer. This could explain the bizarre gait
(I've *still* only seen EWS once!).

oh come on, the shot's obvious. It's colored way different. SK
apparently used really good fake lighting to light cruise's hair to the
lit stores as he passed, too. If i remember correctly, which i won't of
course, it's chapter 9 on the dvd, or right after he's left Marion's
place. Watch when he's walking toward you. Just watch for a difference
in cinematography. It's a neat & pretty shot.

and yeah, i think there's maybe one or two others, i think maybe rear
projection was used in some of the interior car shots?

i think the article, mentioned below, was likely from American
Cinematographer (and maybe on their website as well), in the issue
where they had the cover of EWS on their cover?

Yes, they mentioned the treadmill and rear projection in AC, and obvioiusly the
car shots use rear projection. I wonder why he used the rear projection on the
shot of Cruise walking--certainly seemed easier to shoot it the usual way. I
take it to be a sign of the dream state...
