Hi all,
I'm fairly new to the group also, been following it for a while but
there hasn't been much traffic. Anyways, does anybody know where those
sooooooo-cool wardrobe steamer trunks that Joe used throughout the film
were obtained from?

I have (a much more basic) one that I use to store stuff in, and besides
being pretty cool to look at, they're really quite handy. Very
efficient little inventions, they are. But, mine is also pretty ancient
and rickety and getting a bit musty-smelling on the inside. So, I would
love to have a new one. Looked on eBay and found a bunch of other older
ones. Searched the web and found a few by Louis Vuitton (very frilly
and froo-froo, but hey, it's only $10,000 before taxes & shipping - buy
yours TODAY!! :-). But even these didn't have the nice stained-wood
drawers or the interior mirror or the anti-volcano undercoating or any
of the other excellent features that Joe's trunk had.

So, does anyone know if the trunks used by Joe are commercially
available anywhere? Yeah, yeah, I know they MIGHT have been custom-made
props. But I'll bet half a box of "Thin Mints" that the film crew just
bought or rented 'em out of some shop on Rodeo Drive or something.

Anyone?

Thanks,
Scott

As I posted about 18 mos ago, the trunks being featured on Hammacher
Schlemmer's site (Hammacher.com) at the time looked to be the very
image of Joe's. I seem to remember the flash of the HS sign in the
movie? Does anyone know if that occured around when Joe went to the
luggage place?

If so, they can be yours for the mere pittance of $19,999.95. :)
(plus any interim inflation... :)

HS might have sold this steamer-trunk (that I can't comment on) but in the
movie ...

Joe visits HS and purchases the golf equipment (the salesperson is a woman),
then purchases various items (lantern, umbrella, etc.) from a different
salesperson (perhaps a different location now?), then there's a "cut" to the
city (which might mean that Joe is now traveling to a new locale) and then he
is with the trunk-salesman.

Editing exists to create (among other things) a lapse in time, so the 'city
scene' edit tells me he left HS and went elsewhere to purchase the steamer
trunks.

Just my 2 cents.

Best,
Terrence

In the script, the luggage scene takes place in a "small exclusive
luggage store (J. Russ)." I don't know whether J. Russ is/was a real
store.

I remember your post. I think that trunk was featured on Hammacher
Schlemmer's splash page. I captured an image of it, which is on a zip
disk somewhere.

Yeah. I remember it too. I went to HS when you posted it and seriously
considered buying a quad of those trunks! ;-)

Thanks, Soph. Would that be this trunk?:

http://www.hammacher.com/images/large/78766.jpg

If so, it's similar but not the spittin' image (this one has a curved top
instead of a flat top, and cloth-covered drawers, and no mirror). Still,
it looks pretty stylin' - AND, they have just dropped the price down from
$10,000 to a mere $5,000 - woo-hoo!!! :-)

That's still a lot of dinero, though. Also, after a little hunting around
on the web, I found that you can also go directly to the Italian
manufacturer and buy the same trunk for $7,500 (although that price may be
dropping a lot soon, since Hammacher has dropped theirs):

Richard, if this is a different trunk than the image you saved, would you
be so kind as to pull that sucker off the zip disk and e-mail it to me?
I'd really love to see it. Thanks so much for your help, everybody. Take
care,
Scott

I think the trunks come from Louis Vuitton - they would most likely cost a
fortune.
