This past weekend featured a somewhat dreary Sunday so there was nothing
more appopriate than popping Fargo into our DVD Player.
The question that has nagged me for a while, is what purpose does the Mike
Yamaguchi thread play in the film? The best I could come up with is that it
is our first glimpse that Marge is a strong person in spite of outside
appearances. (By asking Mike to go back to the other side of the table)
Along with her toughness she shows some compassion and understanding in
dealing with the situation...
How else does this thread move the story along, or what else does it
introduce, do you think?
Thanks,
Marge becomes less credulous -- and reinterviews Jerry -- after she realizes
that Mike was lying through their whole conversation. She has, in a sense,
become disillusioned through the experience.

what was the purpose of the character? why is his
dance quintet in the movie. the only answer I can give is
it's just a way of taking us away from the plot for a few
minutes to introduce another character in the life of the
protagonist. It doesn't necessarily have to mean anything
it could just be a way the coen brothers keep us scratching
our heads about life.
