I only recently saw O Brother and liked it very much. However I was left
with several nagging questions after the movie ended. For example, what
happened to Pete in the scene with the sirens? We see his clothes on the
ground and of course Delmar thinks he was turned into a horny toad. We see
Pete again later in the film back working on the chain gang, so obviously he
was not turned into a toad. So, what really happened to Pete? I was
expecting either Evertt or Delmar to ask Pete what really happened to him,
but they never did! My hypothesis is that he told the sirens about the
money, but when he could not tell them where the treasure was, they ditched
him. This explanation though seems woefully inadequate. Maybe I need to
watch the movie again and see if I missed something. Would like to hear
other's thoughts on this scene.

If memory serves, Pete was turned in by the Sirens for the REEward.

There is a short scene immediately after Everett and Delmar have freed Pete
when they discuss what happened. The 'sirens', after fornicating with Pete
turned him in for the reward. They'd planned to turn in Everett and Delmar,
too, but they'd woken up and left before the 'sirens' could return for them.

This scene also features one of the best lines in the movie.

Delmar - "We thought you'd been turned into a toad."
Pete - "Nope. Never was no toad."
Delmar - "That was our mistake then..."
