One of the interesting things about TBL's ending is the way they leave so
much unresolved: the bowling tournament, Maude's pregnancy, exactly what
Maude is going to do when she learns her father embezzled the $1 million.
The Coens challenge our expectations about endings. One of the unstated
laws of the movies, for instance, is that any woman who is pregnant or
becomes preganant during a movie will have her baby before the movie ends.
Well, the Coen Brothers break that rule TWO movies in a row.
There's a thematic tie between the endings of "Fargo" and "TBL" there.
Notice how in both cases, an upcoming birth is shown as a compensation or
correction for the death we've just witnessed. In "Fargo," lots of
characters, both innocent and guilty, are killed, but we end with the image
of Norm and Marge contemplating the birth of their child. ("Two more
months.") Similarly, at the end of "TBL," The Stranger tells us that he
"didn't like seein' Donny go" but takes comfort in the fact that "there's a
little Lebowski on the way."
I realize this has very little to do with the Dude's bowling skills (which
are never actually seen), but I wanted to talk about TBL's ending and this
seemed like the place to do it.
Thanks,
Joe
