External Microphone for XL2- Need suggestion or Advice

I own Cannon XL2 camera PAL version. I am not sure whether I can hook
up one or two SM58 or any other external microhone with XLR cable to
Cannon XL2 camera. Manual is not clear. about this. What adapter
will I need? My goal is to shoot some interview sessions where
interviewer and respondant will use hand held or cordless microphones.
I do not want to use on board XL microphone. I was also thinking
about shotgun mirophone. Is shotgun microphone will serve my purpose?
I will greatly appreciate suggestion from XL 2 owners or a
profoessional cameraman. Any link to a website realting to XL2
information will be also helpful.
