1) Why didn't Heather tell Mike about what she found in the bundle of
sticks? Was she just trying to spare her friend from a major freak-out, or
was there something else going on?
2) Even though she didn't tell him in the beginning, when they heard Josh
calling out in the forest after he disappeared, why didn't she mention it
then? Frankly, if I had found what I assumed to be a missing friend's teeth
and tongue or jawbone or whatever, I would assume that person wasn't capable
of clear speech. I sure as heck wouldn't be following that voice around in
the dark and calling out to it..much less follow it into a weird old
house...
3) Why was Josh the "chosen one"? Was it because, as some have theorized,
that when he knocked over one of the 7 piles of stone, he released the
spirit of one of the children and damned himself? Other opinions more than
welcome.
4) When Mike was standing in the corner of the basement, he was bound to
have heard Heather calling for him and knew she was on her way to the
basement as well. Why didn't he try to warn her off? Is it possible that
by the time she reached the basement, Mike had lost his tongue and some
teeth as well? Was he just so in shock that he COULD"T say anything? Was
he of the opinion that if he kept quiet, he might be freed like the one boy
in the legend of Mr. Parr? Or was he dead and just propped up there? I
don't know..tell me please!!
5) Any theories on why the compass lead them in circles...or was it Heather
that lead them in circles...
6) A little off-topic but indulge me. If the average every day Joe were to
see this movie without having viewed all the information on the website
first, and NOT knowing whether this was reality-based or fictional, would
some of the symbolism be as significant to that person as it was to some of
us? Would the effect by as strong?
7) What was the deal with Mike throwing out the map? Was he genuinely THAT
frustrated and honestly thought it was getting them nowhere, or was he being
influenced by something (or someone)(or something) else...
8) Was it just MY TOWN, or did anyone else have this experience...at the
end of the final scene, when the credits start rolling, no one stood up to
leave, like they were expecting more...
BTW, I did get rather nauseous, but I didn't hurl thank goodness...
As I said before, all of these questions have probably been covered numbers
of times, but honestly, I didn't want to search through all of these posts
to find my answers. So call me shallow.

DON'T SEEK THE ANSWERS FROM A NEWSGROUP OR ANYONE ELSE!
What do I mean? Questions like the ones below are why the movie was made in the
first place. THESE are the questions that are supposed to chill you, make you
think, freak you out and make you ponder them for days on end.
Most of the questions below don't have a real answer, it's up to you.
Would you stand up in a good magic show every time the magician did a trick and
say, "Wait, wait, how did you do that one? I have to know how you did that one?"
No, you wouldn't, and any good magician wouldn't tell you either. :)
This is what makes this movie so fun. You could get answers from people, but why
let them do your thinking for you? Enjoy a few more nights of restless sleep!
A question like What was in the bundle of sticks? I'd seek an answer to, but a
question like Why did Heather react the way she did to the bundle of sticks? I
wouldn't seek an answer to.
Do you really want to know why Mike was *frozen* in the corner? or do you want
your imagination to run wild? If you don't, you wasted $7.50!!

Okie dokie. :)

I would guess she just didn't want to cause Mike the emotional shock and
pain.

old house...
Remember, Mike and Heather were...well, less then totally sane. They
were clinging to the hope...any hope...that Josh was alive and well. When
they heard him yelling, their gut instinct was "Find him, so everything will
be okay again."
>3) Why was Josh the "chosen one"? Was it because, as some have

The stones would be my guess...although there is the possibility that the
witch/spirit/spirit of the witch knew that Josh was the connection between
the two. Remember, Heather hadn't met Mike before the trip. Josh was the
person who knew them both, and by taking him out of the picture, you
severely damage any cohesiveness the party has.

My guess here is that he had been frightened so badly that he had
regressed to a childlike state, and was infuenced to stand in the corner.
>5) Any theories on why the compass lead them in circles...or was it
>Heather that lead them in circles...
According to folklore, compasses (and similar magnetic-related items) go
whacko around the presence of a witch...similar to milk curdling in their
presence. This is a possible explanation.

I say no. A lot of people I know missed out on this aspect of the movie,
because they didn't know a lot of information about the movie. Upon viewing
the Sci-Fi documentary and web page, they shuddered. A lot.
>7) What was the deal with Mike throwing out the map? Was he

I would guess that he was just sick of following the damn thing...but
your explanation is more eviller... >:)

Most people in my theater got up and complained about it...but most of
them were either under 20 or over 60. *SIGH*
>BTW, I did get rather nauseous, but I didn't hurl thank goodness...
I'm glad. My girlfriend had to watch it with her eyes closed, because we
ended up stuck in the front row. I was fine though...I believe I am
honestly immune to motion-sickness. WOO HOO!! :)

You're shallow. :) j/k

No, but I'd talk about it on alt.magic.secrets, and odds are the group
would figure out how it's done.

You could look at discussion as "letting others do your thinking for you,"
but I think the reality is not quite such an abdication of responsibility.

Sometimes other people's comments can be a trigger for your own
imagination to go places it otherwise wouldn't. Sort of like
the way watching a movie gives you something to think about that's
different from making up an entire story in your head from scratch.

I believed that she was trying to spare him the hysteria.

I could not determine what was in the bundle of sticks, so I wasn't making the connection of missing parts of speech.

Well, I thought it was because that he kicked the pile of rocks over. But I didn't think about releasing spirits. I just
figured he either set off some sort of "witch's territory intruder alarm system" or he just ticked her off by knocking
over her stuff.

|4) When Mike was standing in the corner of the basement, he was bound to
|have heard Heather calling for him and knew she was on her way to the

The witch had him in a trance? The language of his body is one thing I want to see again. I seem to recall him in a
stance that one would expect from a six year old being disciplined. Totally spooked me out, even though I didn't
remember the tale at the time.
Is it possible that

I don't think he was dead. He appeared to be standing, not hanging.
|
|5) Any theories on why the compass lead them in circles...or was it Heather
|that lead them in circles...
The witch created a magnetic field that caused a false "south" reading.
|

I purposely avoided all discussions and the hype until after I saw it. I *did* know it was a fakeumentary, because the
first time I heard of it, people were whining about how disrespectful the "Missing "Persons" posters were. But the
symbolism came through pretty strong. And it was a wonderful study in psychological terror, very spooky!
|
|7) What was the deal with Mike throwing out the map? Was he genuinely THAT
|frustrated and honestly thought it was getting them nowhere, or was he being
|influenced by something (or someone)(or something) else...
I honestly think he just did it in a moment of extreme frustration. I'm a bit of a spoiled brat, and Mike's house looked
rather affluent....and I thought "I could see myself doing that." I didn't understand why he opted to tell everybody
that he had done it though. I wouldn't have done that, until we were safely in the car.
|
|8) Was it just MY TOWN, or did anyone else have this experience...at the
|end of the final scene, when the credits start rolling, no one stood up to

Nobody left here, either. And did your theatre leave the lights down? To me, that made the transition back to my life
different that usual, too. Just one more little mind F***, I guess.
