Nope...(I thought fingers and an eye...)
But according to the films producers, it was teeth...
The witch/evil presence stole them from Josh
to steal his voice...
Cool, huh?..;)

So was that verified by the filmmakers or is it still just a fan theory?
Jen
The "steal his voice" motif actually goes *against* what the filmmakers have
stated - that all that is in the bundle is teeth (four molars to be exact)
and some hair. No tongue. If she was going to "steal his voice" why would
she deposit the necessary apparatus outside the tent of the intended quarry?
Isn't that a bit like handing the rifle over to the deer? No, I feel that
the bundle and it's contents were placed there as a threat, a bit of
psychological terrorism. Josh was still very much alive and under her
control, and she/he placed in the bundle the only parts of Josh that could
be removed (by his own hand, of course) without doing serious harm to him.
My theory is that she needed him alive and in good condition, so that he
could then dispatch the other two for her (in Rustin Parr fashion). To me
it's a little bit scarier, the idea of implied treachery by one of their
own, then if they were somehow physically killed off by a ghost (something
she arguably would have just done right away - if such was her ability and
intent - rather than chase them around the woods for eight days for no
apparent reason). If she *could* have struck physical blows from the great
beyond, why would she have even needed to "steal" Josh's "voice" in the
first place? No, sorry. It doesn't add up IMO.

If you summed up everything that everyone here has ever seen in that
bundle, you'd have *all* of Josh in there. She could have pulled his
head out by the hair... "S'alright in the bundle?" "S'alright."

I think that's one possibility...a friend of mine suggested something
different...in some cultures, removal of teeth is something you do as a
form of exorcism. Maybe Josh was trying to maintain some control over
his own body, and that pain was a way to remain lucid, as well as drive
the spirit out. He might have left the bundle himself, knowing he was a
danger if he stayed with Heather and Mike, as a warning to them: Flee,
for here lies madness. Either way, I like the idea that it was the witch
acting through Josh.
