Anyone recommend a cheap starter bike for a newbie? Somewhere in the
$200-400 range that is light and can take a beating.

Any thoughts on:

http://www.bike.com/product.asp?dept%5Fid=174&pf%5Fid=5069

Also does anyone know where I could get a really light weight used BMX bike
for $20-50 bucks?

Also when traveling on the highway (55 mph for cars), what is the proper
road rules to be observed for cyclist? Any documents or pages that deal
with this?

The bike you picked out on bike.com looks okay, if your not going to be
doing any seroius off road riding. I would be cautious buying a bike online
though, without riding it first. I would recomend going in to your lbs and
looking at a specialized, Gary fisher, schwinn, cannondale, GT, or another
well known bike company. The Jeep that you picked out on bike.com only has
21 speeds, thats fine but most bikes now are coming with 24 and 27.
But its your call.

Light is definitely out of the $200 - $400 range. Strong is questionable
too. Maybe you should look for a good used bike.

Very HEAVY, bottom line components, worthless suspension. (35mm front and
63mm rear!)

In your dreams, maybe a garage sale, or from a very good friend. Again,
really light weight and cheap don't go together.

Stay to the far right. Don't get hit. Smarter to wear a helmet, or even
avoid such roads if possible.

Ah nonsense. He can get a Specialized Hard rock for $250 without the shock,
$365 with. Lifetime on the frame and good sturdy bike, still lighter then
any department store bike.

I'd reccomend definitely not a full suspension for under $1000. The swing
arm (the triangle in the back) tends to come really loose and wobbly on
cheap bikes. Instead, get a hard-tail. You can get some Specialized
aluminum (lightweight, as opposed to heavy steel) bikes for that price
range.

The jeep is a steel frame, not even Chromoly, which tells me it is not too
strong ... the components look fair ... in the $450 to $500 range you can
get a 2001 Giant DS-3 Aluminum frame with dual suspension ... or the Rincon
(I think) which is a hardtail for about $300 ... good luck.

The cow might be lighter, too.

would anyone happen to have a link or online review of the cow bike. The
only one I could find is:

http://www.grimesco.ie/departments/children/cow1.htm

and something tells me it won't do too good on jumps (due to it made out of
wood).

stay away from full suspension. i'd get this bike:
http://www.konaworld.com/Bikes/2kbikes/2k-fm.html
i've got the same one, a couple years old, with a rigid steel fork. it's a
perfect beater. steel, not too light, not too cheesy, cheap to fix or
replace parts. i don't know about the RST fork, but i'd venture to guess
it's better than whatever's on the jeep.

Ditto! The Specialized Hardrock FS (with susp. front shock) should be more like
$300-$330 though. Excellent, dependable entry level bike.
