I'm looking to buy a mountain bike and have almost settled on the Trek 4300.
I would love to hear your opinions on this model. I checked out a couple of
review sites, but getting opinions from people who've had their bikes for 3
months or less doesn't do it for me.
Here's the info that the LBS guys asked for:
I'm looking for something that I can do trails with and should i fall in
love with the sport, I'd upgrade around the frame as things wore out.
50/50 trail vs. road riding.
Budget $500 canadian (the trek 4300 is 499.99)
I'm 5'10, 175 lbs
I definetly want fr suspension.
Not sure about shifter...but I seemed to like the grip shifts.
Here's the quick specs to refresh your memory:
Oversized AlphaT aluminum.
Matrix 550 rims and Connection tires tackle trails and pavement.
InSync 266 fork (65mm travel, adjustable preload) smoothes out trails and
paths. ***these any good?***
Shimano TY40 crank and C050/Acera 21-speed shifting.
13", 16.5", 18", 19.5", 21", 22.5"
Gloss Black/Metal Flake Yellow, Trek Red
Other bikes I tried:
Lower end KHS (~415.00) I don't remember the model. Average, but the fr.
suspension wasn't adjustable at all.
Giant Ricon SE (519.00). The suspension was too noisy. It didn't make me
feel comfortable ( sr/suntour m8040 with 73mm travel)
Rocky Fusion (849.99) awesome bike but at almost double my budget! I loved
the front end suspension.
You guys have it right when you say buy from a bike shop. Mine offers free
tune-ups for life, including trueing the rims
Thanks in advance,
Reg.
>Here's the quick specs to refresh your memory:
> Oversized AlphaT aluminum.
this is Treks lowest end aluminum frame. its a little heavy and not
particularly special but it gets the job done.
> Matrix 550 rims and Connection tires tackle trails and pavement.
connection tires are a joke. the wheels are ho-hum.
> InSync 266 fork (65mm travel, adjustable preload) smoothes out trails and

no, theyre really pathetic, but you would probably have to spend just
about as much as youll spend on this bike to get a good suspension
fork.
> Shimano TY40 crank and C050/Acera 21-speed shifting.
again, not particularly good components, but they work. theyll get
you started in mountainbiking, but youll want a new bike instead of
upgrades if you become more Serious.
vee, wishing his apostrophe key worked
I changes the crank, brakes and wheels.. just because I had spares off my
old machine.. the frame is great on the 4000 series...
go for it...
