Are the Intense bikes all that good? (especially the M1)
Would it be worth is (i'm guessing) 6000$ cdn price tag?

Thanks

That's a nice bike but I personally could not justify paying that much
for it. There are other bikes on the market with the same quality but
for cheaper $$$.

I'm interested in getting an Intense (DH-1) as well, but the pricetag is
pretty large. I sent them email asking some specific questions about the
differences and abilities for setup between the Uzzi-SL and the DH-1, and
got no response. I thought the whole point of buying a 'custom' US brand
was customer service. My dealer is cool, but really only know DH setups
and not XC. Well, I guess I won't be dropping the coin...

In a word, yes!
I know several privateer riders who run them because of the superb
performance and quality. I know a lad (ex-MX rider) who broke a Rotwild and
2 Yeti's. He now rides a second hand Intense with some fairly major damage
after falling off a roof rack of a Subaru Imprezza (sp?) at about 90mph!!!
(big surprise it fell of!).
Despite the damage it is still the sweetes bike I have ridden and has yet
to show rider damage to the extent of the other frames.
Also, look at the number of riders that used to spec. an M1 then badge it up
as their own sponsors ride.

Damn sweet but also pretty bleedin expensive. You have to pay if you want
the best!

Hi Carla,

Could you supply me with some of the names of these less expensive, same
quality bikes. Thanks

Well, lemme think...

Kona Stab Dee-Lux
Iron Horse SGS-DH
Balfa Bb7
Norco VPS-1
Aeon Joker

These quickly come to my mind.

Hey Carla,

Well, I own the VPS-1, a friend of mine owns the Kona and I have seen the
rest of the these bikes. Have you seen an Intense M1 up close? Not one of
these bikes even comes close to matching the quality of the Intense. The fit,
finish and attention to detail are all top notch. I got all excited when you
said "same quality but for cheaper $$$". Don't get me wrong I think these are
all durable bikes, I ride one myself, but put it beside the Intense and
difference is glaring.

DOH, that reminds me. I need to get off of my duff and down to Moab.
Lee has a prototype Joker that is set up for someone my size, ready and
waiting for me to demo. For those interested, a full equipment report
will follow as soon as I get down there (in about two weeks).

In absolute terms, they're good, but not *that* good.

Construction is SHIT. I was appalled when I saw the one we got. Then I
saw others and learned that it wasn't unique. I don't know how they get
away with it.

Design is good, and the company keeps ahead of the times, but it's
become like a 'name' - "if you want to win, you must have an M1".
Personally I think that's just laziness.

There are better and less expensive frames, especially for the self-
supporting privateer, from Foes, Cortina and Santa Cruz to name a few.

However, if you must shell out the bucks, go for the M1. At least it
works well.

Yes, but if you're comparing quality of construction, not quality of
finish, those other bikes are just as good (except for the Iron Horse).

Which Intense are you looking at? Specialized makes a bunch of bikes in the
FSR series that are quite good. I've had an FSR for almost three years and
am very happy. Of course, you lose out a little in the finish and such, but
you get it for a lot cheaper. Specialized makes a complete bike or frame to
match up to any of the Intenses. As far as complete bikes, they have the
FSR XC series with 3.5" of travel, the Enduro series with 4.6" of travel and
disc brakes (and looks almost dead on like the Intense Tracer, by the way),
the Big Hit at 5.3" of travel and at a lower price point the Rockhopper FSRs
with like just over 4". Except for the Big Hit, the bikes come at different
specs and price-points. Other than that, you can get the Team Down Hill
frame at around 7" or the Team Dual Slalom frame with 4 and a half inches of
travel.
Be aware, too, that Intense has to pay Specialized for the use of their
suspension design. They both use the same four-bar link, though Intense
uses full bearing in the pivots and are really just a more intensively made
bike. (If you look closely at the derailleur-side dropout, you'll see
Specialized's name on it) About a dozen other companies also get the okay
from Specialized to use the design including Titus, McMahon and AMP, even
though AMP was the first one to use it. Haro is going to be joining in
too. For 2001 they have a trailbike frame that's a ringer for the Intense
Tracer. Small wonder, though, because it's made by Intense for Haro. It'll
be about $300 less than the Tracer (frame only). Esentially it IS a Tracer
stickered by Haro.
The big thing is, contrary to the statement below that you'll find the
same quality for a lot less dough, Intense's quality and workmanship are
second to none. Titus is very close, but actually a bit higher in price.
Except for the Haro mentioned above, no one has the same quality for any
less. Specialized is good stuff, but just not as top-drawer as Intense. An
Uzzi SL is my next purchase in another year or so when my FSR gives up.

Intense pays for the use of the Horst Link. This type of modelling was
apparently used by Horst Leitner when designing the now famous Amp rear
suspension. The patent for the Horst Link was purchased by Specialized.
