Race Report. Nov. 4-5. about 40 mi. Southeast of Austin near Smithville, TX.

The weather had been rainy and very humid. It rained on the way to the
event. We arrived just in time to watch the racers line up at the start
line and make the 100 yrd. dash to their steeds to mount and begin the 24
hrs. of mud, sweat and tears. I had planned on racing this event but really
didn't get the planning done in time and my divorce action kind of got in
the way. I figured I'd watch it this year and get a feel for the in's and
out's of this type of racing. The course was moist and sticky for most of
Saturday but early Sunday morning it became rainy and it got hairy. Times
reduced dramatically and the technical sections became challenging.

It was awesome. Teams of 4,5 and 4+1 female and even pairs riding for
24hrs with little to no sleep. Most of these guys looked young and very
strong but there was the occasional middle aged soul out there who enjoyed
pain. There were tents, trailers and trucks everywhere along the dirt fire
roads near the start/finish. There was lower and upper camping areas to
pich tents and set up for cooking etc. The atmosphere was all Mtb. The
rain made it really muddy and we had a blast cruising around the place
watching the race from our bikes. We were covered in mud even though we
didn't race but it was a blast.

Nightrider did their thing out there and had plenty of batteries on hand
to keep the Teams supplied with batteries & lights. It would have been nice
if they had better shower facilities but I can see how mud in drains could
be a problem. They had 1 outdoor and one indoor. The "Saloon" was quite
the Texas style with a front porch and lots of Beer and food.

Overall it was an exciting event and worth going. If I can keep up my
fitness level and skills it may be worth planning and racing next year.
