Hello again,

I am about to purchase my first full suspension bike. Can't Wait!

Anyway, I have been doing my homework and have narrowed my choices down to

1999 Trek VRX 300............$1200.00
1999 Cannondale Super V 500..$1250.00
1998 Connondale Super V 900..$1250.00 Sale

I have read the reviews at www.mtbr.com, checked for reviews in several
magazines, and gone to three different bike shops in San Antonio Texas to
compare service and pricing.

I love to fly over rough terrain, do little high speed down hill but do
enjoy the occasional down hill over rough sections that include rock
strun areas, and am not to wild about long dirt roads although most of
the area around me up and down hill dirt trails.

The Connondale's are lighter, have very accurate tracking (no wondering,
they go were you point them) BIG PLUS, and a good warranty.

The Trek has a new suspension that from what I hear is very plush and
hands obstacles on the trail with easy. It is however a little on the
heavy side. It's weight leads me to believe it is capable of handling a
lot of abuse without sever frame damage.

Any insight would be helpful.

Eddie

In the same price range I would recommend
checking out the 98 Proflex K2/4000 and the 98 Specialized
FSR. (I just bought an FSR Comp after much research)

lol, I heard someone once accuse www.mtbr.com of being full of reviews by
rich 13-year old guys who do nothing but trials and say "RST sux. Get some
Bomber Z1s" as their review for some RST 381s or something... I think that
has more to do with their lack of money-handling-faculties than that they
ever rode an RST fork, and that they reckon they're just too cheap to look
good on their bike! (sounds like most of the riders in my area <g>) are
these the guys who buy those DCD things? lol, I'm provoking now I guess :)

But I take it you read the reviews not just the average ratings, so I guess
they're probably some use... remember to compare what kind of riding they
were considering the bike for, though... if you look through the reviews for
the old GT RTS bikes, they were split almost half and half between people
who thought it was great for XC and people who thought it was shabby cos it
had hardly any travel by today's standards... it all depends what you want
from it... but some things will hold true either way...

The VRX has got itself a reputation for being very soft... it's plush, but
some people think too squishy... I don't know if you'll find that a problem
on the climbs, it will depend on many things including your pedalling stroke
and weight.

I'd agree that Cannondale has a way better reputation for warrantee... trek
has quite a bad one.

One thing you might want to think about is that HeadShock thing on the
Cannondale... sure, they track great (one of my mates has one on his
Cannondale) but they're all seriously short of travel.... I've heard about
5 people complain that even if they remove the springs, there isn't the 80mm
quoted travel, it's usually more like 75... just something to think about.
I think HeadShock is a cool idea, but it needs more travel to be competitive
now. :(

hope this is some use and not all nonsense <wideG>

Your friends notice 5mm difference?
There are 10mm to 1cm.
There are 2.some cm to 1 inch.
So your friends are noticing something somewhat less than 1/4 of an
inch. Boy, are they sensitive, or what?
The SID only has about 2.5" of travel, and I've talked to people that
are racing it...it's really only about 1.5" at best. Funny how people
aren't complaining too much about that.

I would go with the TREK. I just got a VRX and it is great. My friend has
the Cannondale and there is no comparison. I also like he adjustable travel
in the rear. I have a Judy triple clamp on there as well. It might be a bit
heavier, but for me (200lbs) it was a better choice. The High-pivot swingarm
is way nicer than the Cannondale rear end too.
