Understood ya just fine, BG! Anyway, I'm a fan of Avid, just in general.
So that'd be the way I would go... if you can find 'em, look for the Avid
Arch Rivals (they've got a little horshoe shaped piece with a pivot in the
middle between the two sides of the brake, which is PART of the brake, not
an extra booster). They're fantastic!

Im a big fan of the avids. Never used the Srams, but the Avids are
superior to the Shimano V-brakes I have tried. If you can find them, get
the Avid Arch Rival 50s (or supremes if you want to spend a bit more) I run
50s on my hardtail...

I'll second Jon's opinion of the Avids. My AR50s have perforemed flawlessly
on my FS, and the Supremes on my hardtail are absolutely the best V-brake
ever produced - bar none.

Actually, I have been having some trouble with the front right cartridge
(brake pad holder). It never wants to hold its setting (toe in) no matter
how hard the bolt is cranked down (and no, its not stripped). I'm gonna try
to take off the washers and rough 'em up a little bit, and see if that
helps.
However, thats my *only* complaint! Everything else is just spiffy!

Like John, I have AR50s on my full-suspension bike. They're simply
wonderful. I'm running them with XTR levers and they perform flawlessly.
My friend has a Sugar2 with Avids (SingleDigit-5s I think) driven by LX
levers and he loves them. One other guy swapped out the cheapo ProMax
brakes and levers on his 2000 Sugar4 after only a couple of rides for Avid
SingleDigit-7 and SpeedDial-7 levers and couldn't be much happier with it.
My wife's bike has Avid 25 and LX levers and they've given her no problems
either although she only rides moderately. Given a choice between Avid and
Shimano V-brakes, I'll always go for Avids with possible exception of the
Avid Mag levers... I heard they bend too easily in crashes.

Go Avid. Best v-brakes made. I've not tried the Avid 5.0 model, but I'm sure
they are as good as all the other Avid products.

Crashing with the mags, not a bend (fell down an escalator) ...in them
my previous brakes bent (tektro quartz)... true heavy duty are the deore
levers... (just heavy)
