I was stunned yesterday to find one of the best bike shops around San Diego
County swallowed by a franchise, Performance Bicycles.

Technically they weren't swallowed. The owners were looking to retire
so they found a buyer.

It will be interesting to see what Performance does with the shops
though. As far as I know, it hasn't been determined if they're going
to run them as Performance shops or as a seperate business. Only time
will tell though.

My LBS (Liberty Bikes) is part of Performance and they still provide
personal service and expert advice. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

My LBS *IS* Performance Bikes. I avoided them for years because of the
"big bad guy" thing. Then I went in once to check for pricing, only to
find that the not-so-big guys had been ripping me off.

Since then I've found their service to be as good or often better than
other LBSs as well. I guess they're the "big good guy", after all.

To the original poster: now you have an LBS that gives you Internet
prices and (probably) great service. You find this to be a PROBLEM?

i bought a whole xtr group from performance bike, and they inatalled it all
for the labor of headset alone. and only because they had to show some
labor. complete group and headset install for $30. for that money, beats
doing it myself. i also got enough back to buy lots of goodies from there
mailorder!
they were nice and professional, prices wer not the cheapest, but the
service was second to none.

I think Performance is good for what it is. A bike shop to the casual
biker and not necessarily to the enthusiast. The specialize more in
the low to middle end of the market and for that they do a great job.
The do have wonderful prices on some things so they are good there
too. And even though they will now "Internet Prices", I've found that
on several items I've purchased at Performance I had to have the store
actually price match to themselves because the in store price was
significantly higher than the internet price.

On the down side, I walked into my local Performance shop one time to
pick up a spare chain on my way to a weekend trip. After a quick tour
around the shop (some stuff had been moved since I was in there last)
without spotting them I decided to cut right to the chase and ask the
sales girl where the chains were. After thinking about it for a
minute she had to ask somebody else not WHERE the chains were, but IF
they even sold them!

I've had a friends have to explain to the repair person the proper way
to install headset races so I've been a little suspect of their
service myself but I'm sure it all depends on the people and not the
store or parent company in general.

True. They don't always have what I want in stock, nor do they
necessarily carry every thing I want. This is true for any LBS. I've
noticed that most LBSs are increasingly targeting the low-end, because
that's where the sales are. I was looking for some local price
comparisons for a Bomber, and couldn't find anything on this side of
town (including Performance).

For those of you not familiar with Performance LBSs, their in-shop
price isn't necessarily their web price. This is especially true with
sales. There are in-shop sales and webpage sales, and they're not
related. But if you bring in a printout of what you're looking for
(from their webpage), they'll match it (unlike other LBSs). Their
in-shop price is generally lower than other LBSs anyway.

Sure. I doubt all Perfomance LBSs do a good job, just like any other
LBSs. My only point is they don't all do a bad job, and some do a
great job.
