Description: Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of MAT 001 or by college placement; RDG 001 (may be taken concurrently). A non-credit course that prepares students to take a credit-level general liberal arts course in mathematics. Students who intend to take MAT 109 and/or major in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics related discipline should take MAT 002 instead of this course. This course integrates quantitative literacy with mathematical concepts such as fluency with numbers, proportional reasoning, data interpretation, algebraic reasoning, graphing lines, and modeling. Class discussions will be used to investigate mathematical concepts based on real-life examples. Some examples include: social justice; home repair; population growth and density; and consumer literacy. Students should be prepared to actively participate in class discussions during every class meeting. Hand-held scientific calculators will be used (4.5 lecture hours). Students who intend to major in science, technology, engineering or mathematics should take MAT002 or MAT 003 instead of this course. Operations with real numbers; exponents and scientific notation; equations and inequalities; functions and graphs; system of equations and determinants; triangle trigonometry and introduction to general trig definitions; algebraic products and factoring; solving equations by factoring and quadratic formula; fractional equations and operations with algebraic fractions. Applications are considered from various scientific, technical, and practical areas. Prerequisites: Three years of Regents H.S. mathematics, with at least a 78% on Math B Regents; or at least a 75% average in three years of Regents H.S. mathematics (including trigonometry - i.e. Sequential 3); or at least a C in MAT 109 or MAT 116.

This course has a problem solving approach that emphasizes the importance of mathematical reasoning in addressing real-world problems drawn from diverse disciplines. Topics include arithmetic (signed numbers, fractions, decimals and percents), linear equations and inequalities, basics of geometry, functional concepts, linear function and its graph, polynomial algebra, radical expressions, and the quadratic formula. Applications to linear and quadratic model are featured. The course is intended for students with little or no algebra background.

This course provides a solid grounding in algebra, trigonometry, and analytic geometry in preparation for further mathematical studies. The course includes an extensive study of linear, quadratic, and rational functions. It also contains an introduction to exponential and logarithmic functions and circles. Finally, the topic of systems of linear equations is covered.

Math Literacy is designed to develop proportional reasoning and algebraic maturity while focusing on solving real-world applications. A complete set of prerequisite topics supports student success with ratios, percentages, measurement, geometry, probability, data analysis, equations, lines, and functions.

Corequisite Support for Liberal Arts Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning provides a complete set of prerequisite topics to promote student success in Liberal Arts Mathematics or Quantitative Reasoning by developing algebraic maturity and a solid foundation in percentages, measurement, geometry, probability, data analysis, and linear functions.

Liberal Arts Mathematics promotes analytical and critical thinking as well as problem-solving skills by providing coverage of prerequisite topics and traditional Liberal Arts Math topics on sets, logic, numeration, consumer mathematics, measurement, probability, statistics, voting, and apportionment. Additional topic areas include real numbers, functions, systems of equations, geometry, and trigonometry.
