virago engine noise

Hi there,

Just got back from a long ride on my '82 virago 920. About halfway through
the ride my engine started making a loud pinging noise. As I was in the
middle of nowhere I rode home (about 250km) with the noise getting
progressively worse. When I got home it was deafening with the ping noise
louder than the engine. It sounded like the noise was coming from the front
cylinder exhaust. I didn't notice any power loss, no smoke from the
exhaust, engine started up fine when I got home... just an incredable metal
on metal ping noise. I'm thinking valves??? Anyone ever come across this
problem? Any hints as to where to look first before I rip the engine
completely apart (planning that after the snow comes)??? Any help would be
appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance,
Paul

there are a few things to check. Is it consistant like with the
revolution of the engine? or is it erratic? i have a 91 virago 750 and
it has a automatic cam chain tensioner that can stick or possibly go
bad that would let the part that rides against the chain bounce
around, on mine they are located half way down from the top of the
cylinder on the outside, to the rear of the cylinder. This would
probably cause more of a knock than a ping but it is easy to check by
removing the cam sprocket inspection cover to check chain tension.
Sounds a lot like valve noise, is the valve cover easy to get off
since it is on the front? mine is. looking there might tell something.
I don't know much about 82 virago 920's so i probably didn't help
much....good luck , dev

Hmm, hope it's not anything like the clattering noise my '82 started

Just a thought,

Have you adjusted your valves lately? That COULD be the solution to your problem.

I was talking with a mechanic about the viragos. Was visiting
to get the shims for the starter.
He said the 920 had a recall issue, (of course not still in effect), where
the hardening of the cam was missed and therefore once wear got to a certain
point... the wear accelerated.

I may be down the same road as I have the same 82 920.

hey,
just read your page... there is alot of stuff I have to do to the bike.
Thanks!! I was actually thinking of scrapping it this winter, but looking
at your virago, i think i may do a little work on it when the snow comes!
