All;
I'm finally buying my bike. I'm at the point of reserving one ow two
bikes, to be purchased at the end of next month (Neither are available in
local showrooms. So come advance leg work is necessary).

My question is:

I'd really like to get an honest feel for the reliability of the V-Star
1100 motor (and the bike overall). One of the bikes I'm looking at is a
2004 1100 Silverado.
I really like the bikes looks, but I've heard some ugly war stories of
people having problems with noisey lifters, and problems with the starter
working lose, and bending the bolts, etc.

This concerns me enough to come ask in a place where there are hopefully
enough 1100 owners to really give me a good feel for just how serious
these problems are. I don't want to buy into a problem. I've also noticed
that sales of this bike have slowed in the past year. Possibly due to the
persistant problems?

I'd greatly appreciate some honest input on this before I buy.

Thank you in advance.

Ric

i had the starter problem with my 1100, the bolts bent and the housing
broke, yamaha replaced the starter free of charge.. so thats one thing u
dont have to worry about.other than that, the 1100 was the best bike i had
till i stepped up to a roadstar.. great bike :)) the rodie is even better.

Well Ric this is your lucky day. i own one of each in the star line. I have
2000 vstar 650
2001 vstar 1100
2000 Roadstar
1999 Royal star

I wouldnt trade any of them for anything else. Currently My roadstar is
stock
and im going to chop the 650 and 1100 vstar. The royal star im thinking of
converting to a trike. The VSTARs
i bought new and have never had any problems with either. The stars sometimes
get a little vlave clatter but ive always checked the valves and they were
well within tolerences. Ive questioned many Yamaha mech and even written to
Mags like ROADBIKE, CRUISNG RIDER, and told that i shouldnt worry as the
clatter may indicate the valves may be a little loose but at least you caan
tell they are not to tight which could pose more substantial problems. i can
say with all certainty that the yamaha line is one of the best cruiser lines i
have ever owned.

I have a 2003 Vstar 1100 with about 2500 miles on it. I have done all
sorts of mods to it. But when it was and I ahve had no problems other then
the ones I caused my self. I think they got that starter thing worked out.

I have a 2002 Classic 1100 and like it a lot. There are certain pipes
you can put on and eliminate the oil filter removal problem or buy a
spin-on adapter kit. The valves can be adjusted to be quiet. Most
people complain most about the seat. After about an hour you are
ready for an aftermarket seat of some kind! They are very reliable
bikes. I have over 12,000 miles and no problems.

I've got to agree about the seats...It would be great if Yamaha would spend
$100 more on a better stock seat. I'd gladly pay that to keep my butt from
aching after an hour. Mustang Seats' web site has all kinds of accolades
for their VStar seats, and it may be my next upgrade.

Anybody have any experiences with Mustang or other aftermarket seat?

Be careful about the Mustang seats. I tried one and found it to be worse
than the stock seat. It mainly comes from my height. If you're over 6'1"
then go with another seat. The Mustang seat pushed me into the tank and
cramped my knees and legs. I eventually went with the Corbin seats Yamaha
offers in their accessories catalog. It sits you a bit further back and
gives some nice back support. It happens to be about $100 cheaper than the
Mustang seat, which was nice.
