Gear Whine

gear whine that other motorcycles with shafts and big torquey engines have?
My Honda Pacific Coast was a 800cc twin that had shaft drive, but I never
noticed any such whine, but my 1832cc Goldwing has it. It's only noticeable
when idling in Neutral. I'm thinking that it's a result of square-cut gears
instead of beveled gears found on smaller bikes. Opinions?

all of the gear-driven bikes make a whining sound on deceleration.
this is just a function of the shaft / gear-drive system.
If you are really worried about it, get louder pipes so you don't have
to hear it anymore!

With the bike in neutral and the clutch lever released the input shaft
is driven and there will be more mechanical noise than with the clutch
pulled in. Is this noise with the clutch in or out? My knowledge of
shaft driven is very limited.

regardless, chances are, if the bike's idling, it's most likly not moving,
so gears on the driveshaft probably aren't the source of the noise.
Might be the passenger?

Could be!! Maybe a bottle of BEANO could solve the issue. A lot easier
then checking the bearings.

You recall incorrectly. Either that or my VRSCR Street Rod
(tm) is missing the shaft drive.
With the stock exhaust,the primary gear whine from the
engine is noticable to me but then my hearing aids might be
turned up too high.Wouldn't be the first time.
No gear whine at all on my FXR......

The way the "R" model V Rod I bought last summer handles,
has me considering putting the stock length shocks back on
my "early" 84 FXR.Ground clearance & lean angles rule !
