Mikuni HSR42 (great carb!!) - SE air cleaner
Compu-fire single fire ignition (rev limit 6000) with Crane coils
2-in-2 supertrapp with closed cap/18 discs
EV27 (crane time savers)
Screemin' chicken valve springs and collars (lift OK to 0.550)
heads ported
heads shaven 0.040 (raises CR to 9:1)
Just had the top end rebuild - was running bad and turned out one of the
barrels was out of round and losing compression (20K miles!!). Now 10 thou
overbore. During the rebuild I took the opportunity to shave the heads and
got them ported.
Just finished the break-in for the rings. Runs great - more power down low
(higher compression?) and come on real strong. Have the feeling the cam is
doing a great job in the midrange but running out of air at higher revs.
Fits the profile of a EV27 as far as I know. Had to retard the ignition some
3 degrees to stop the pinging - again the cam? To high of a static
compression? Valve train is making an unbelievable noise - can hear the
chattering even when wearing ear plugs!!
As mentioned I'm ready for a bigger cam - would like it to pull all the way
to the rev limiter (and running a little cooler AND getting rid of some of
this unbelieveable valve train noise)
ideas like the Ev46 - more overlap, should run higher revs but then I read
about these fast ramps (more noise??) Screemin' Eagle SE54 maybe? Or one of
the Crane cams?? Will not go to extreme - reliability is what one needs when
cruisin' through Australia - not many bike shops in the outback...

HSR42 (AWESOME), SE Air Cleaner/breather kit, Dyna2000 Dual-Fire, SE Coil, SE
Wires, Bosche Platinum Plugs, Ram Jett Intake Manifold, SE Slip-ons (retained
factory headers and crossover tube), EV46, and Andrews Chromoly adjustable rods.
...in my 1996 FXDWG
The package is totally awesome, pulls hard from about 2500 to 6000. Freeway
speed acceleration is addicting and allows me to pass cages with a slight twist
of the wrist (which also invokes a shit-eating-grin and belly laugh every time I
do it). As far as noise goes, the motor sounds a bit different than before, but
isn't too noticable because the tone of the exhaust is so much sweeter than
before - it just doesn't matter!
The bike definitely prefers being ridden in the 3000-4000rpm range while
twisting through mountain roads and the power is instantaneous with the EV46.
Open it up to the limit and you need a seatbelt to keep your ass on the seat! I
ran with the stock cam, rods, and other mods for about 5000 miles before adding
the EV46 and rods. That was 500 miles ago and my bike has never run better.
Just when you think you can't love your bike anymore, you do these simple mods
and she's a totally new experience!

I've run an EV5 in my softail since 91, and been happy with it. Lots more
power in the mid-range, and you don't have to run the "red-line" RPMs to feel
the power. I did change the rem limiter to 6250 though. Only slight
complaint being the increased vibration, and the problems that that caused
(ie: speedo housing cracking and breaking, needing the "large" bottle of
locktite, etc.)

On the octane - down here the best one can get is 92 octane (leaded - that's
when you get the good stuff) - combined with near 100 degrees and the hills
around here pinging is almost normal. I retarded this time as it kept on
pinging through the entire power band.
Tried the trapps with open end caps - that's a bit much in the sound
department. OK for an hour or so but after a days ride the ears start
ringing - even with ear plugs...
thanks!

The EV27 is a little too mellow once you bump the compression IMHO.
For a light bike like yours, the EV46 is a great choice.
The EV51 has a little more lift (.510) and would work real
good also. The Crane 326 would be another good choice.
