Hello
I needed to replace the front engine mount on my fxrp in order to
get enough clearance to fit
a Thunderheader on. The old mount is 14 years old (its an '84) and
had compressed due to dry rot
and fatigue. It was overdue. It was causing the engine to lean
forward a bit which caused the
header to not have enough clearance from the frame. Now its fine.

But I figure I should change the rear mounts too. I can't find the
description on how to do
the rear mounts in the manual, although I haven't spent too much
time looking yet. Does
anyone have any tips on changing the rear mounts?

Thanks in advance,

First off there are no rear motor mounts in the same sense as there is a
front one.

The motor bolts directly to the tranny which is sandwiched between the
rear fork bushings. So what you have are round bushings which are
pressed into the end loops of the swingarm, and a set of eccentric
rubber mounts that use those eliptical pieces (with 2 bolts and a large
center hole) to hold the whole thing to the frame.

On your scooter this is most likely a nasty job to do because of the
tendancy of the fork pivot shaft to weld itself to the large bushings
inside of the swingarm.

We just went through this with my bud's '84 FXR and thank gawd had the
motor out of the beast so we could remove the tranny/swingarm as an
assembly and put it on a bearing press (heat and large hammers did
nothing)to remove the shaft. This was in the end a real good thing to
do, as he had been experiencing some handling problems due to the shaft
being frozen in the bushings.

You will most likely need to purchase an aftermarket kit that somes with
all new bushings and a new shaft (see Ted's V-Twin catalog for the kit).

Good luck

i would suggest comp cams front motor mount..mine has held up
nicely after 2 full seasons of thrashing
r+r'ing the clevebloc set up in the rear swingarm is a genuine
nightmare for the do it yourselfer - buy the right tools for installation
unless you are handy and very lucky
get help and a sixer for that one......

Sounds like this may be one of the reasons that Harley invented the Dyna Glide
chassis arrangement. I hear that it's not quite as good a handler as the FXR,
needs a "torque arm" between the engine and gearbox on the right hand side, but
is much easier to do repairs on.

-- I just put in new Velva Ride engine steasdies and front rubber mounts on my
1990 FXRT and they are great. You should change the rubber mounts at 50,000
miles. I have not tried to change the rear rubber mounts but I think it is a
job for a Harley Technician if you need to ask how to do it!

Ride safe and free.
