Has anyone heard of the specifics of the crash. How could it happen than
several bikes could be so severely involved in one accident?

five died. four bikes, one two up. a car was waiting to make a turn off the
road and it was hit from the rear at high speed pushing it into the lane of
the four bikes. It seems as they were riding in a tight group and didn't
have time to react. A sad accident, but a lesson could be learned in group
riding to leave space between you and the bikes in front of you for reaction
time. doug

5 motorcyclists die in Hwy.
101 crash
Hundreds riding north of Willits
Jun. 15, 1998
By ROBERT DIGITALE
Press Democrat Staff Writer
Five motorcyclists, among hundreds returning from an annual summer
gathering, died Sunday in a gruesome collision on a two-lane stretch of
Highway 101 north of Willits.
Four men and one woman died, including a 39-year-old Sonoma man. Their
identities were withheld Sunday night as authorities tried to notify
relatives.
Another Sonoma man, Anthony Joseph Salinas, 41, was treated after he
managed to avoid colliding with a vehicle that spun into his lane.
Three occupants of two vehicles also were injured.
The crash was one of two in Mendocino County involving motorcyclists
Sunday. It occurred about 1:20 p.m. roughly five miles north of Willits.
For hours afterward, the highway remained closed or limited to one lane
of traffic.
The weekend was the Redwood Run, an annual gathering of hundreds of
motorcyclists near Piercy at the Humboldt County line. On Sunday,
most of the participants headed home.
"There was an extreme amount of traffic on the highway,'' said Kendra
Dabney at the Village Cafe in Laytonville.
The CHP reported the crash occurred as a Jeep Cherokee stopped in the
northbound lane, its driver waiting to make a left turn. A Ford pickup
rear-ended the Jeep, spinning it into the southbound lane.
Four motorcycles collided with the Jeep. One rider went over the Jeep's
hood and landed 30 feet away from the point of impact, the CHP
reported.
Salinas, the Sonoma resident, was the sole cyclist involved who managed
to avoid the Jeep. He suffered injuries when his cycle went down, but
didn't require hospitalization.
All the cyclists were wearing helmets.
Three of the dead had resided in San Luis Obispo County. Another lived
in Pleasant Hill. The four ranged in age from 38 to 53.
The driver of the Jeep, Matthew Alan Veale, 41, of Loon Lake, Wash., was
flown by helicopter to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. He
was listed in fair condition with multiple pelvic fractures, a hospital
spokeswoman said late Sunday.
The driver of the pickup was listed as Sean Michael Lenihan, 35, of
Concord. Lenihan and his passenger, Michele Lee Beck, 25, of Concord,
received minor injuries, the CHP reported.
Earlier Sunday, three motorcyclists collided on Highway 101 about six
miles south of Willits, a CHP dispatcher reported. Three of the four
people involved were injured.
The crash occurred about 11:30 a.m., a mile south of Ridgewood Summit.
One of the cyclists lost control, ran off the highway, struck a
guardrail and collided with another cycle, the CHP reported. A third
cyclist escaped injury when his cycle struck one of the downed bikes.
One of the cycles caught fire.
All the cyclists in that crash were from San Luis Obispo County.

Two drivers fucked up here. The driver who was waiting to make the
left turn apparently had turned his wheels while waiting and the push
from the rear shoved him into the opposite lane.
NEVER EVER turn your wheels while waiting to make a left. Wait for the
traffic to clear and then turn the wheel while making the turn. You
could save someone's life.
My sympathies to the families of the victims. There but for the grace
of random chance...
