Protocol being protocol, the non-MoCo Plastic is on the bar, got a question
here regarding intake and carburation...got the Wide Glide set up with 1550
Kit, 257 Cam, ported, polished with 10.5:1 Wisecos...I also have a Hypercharger
and a Mikuni setup for the intake end of things. Im considering going S&S
Super E, losing the Hypercharger (Im finding its more show than go) and
possibly a velocity stack or Forcewinder on the intake. Any thoughts on
changing? Looking for pros and cons of the S&S vs Mikuni (other than the
obvious, Rising Sun vs America debate) and hypercharger vs Velocity Stack
and/or Forcewinder. Currently putting out 102HP and 109 TQ.

Well, for some strange reason, I've always liked
how Hyperchargers looked, but I couldn't see how
they would help, and it's gotta weigh more than
just a standard air cleaner cover. Kuryaykyn (sp?)
isn't going to be selling me one. Also, there's a
running joke about them here, if you hadn't
noticed.

I'm not actually familiar with these, so I'm going
to be no help here. Just remember, there's a
shitload of Harley performance snakeoil out there.
An SE air cleaner works for me.
From my experience with both carbs, the Mikuni is really a better carb. Its
got more adjustments, which can be both good and bad, but once dialed in, it
will give you all the breathing that a 95" motor can handle. You won't gain a
thing with the S & S. Your numbers are decent and you might get a tweak or two
to give you a bit more HP, but not enough to feel the difference. Tuning what
you've got is probably the best alternative, as far as carbs go.
I'd agree and ditch the hypercharger, but would stick with either the SE unit
or a Ness Big Sucker. Both work well. I'd stay away from a velocity stack
unless you've got a bad carb standoff problem. (vapor coming back out the
throat of the carb.)

Oh, I just did.

Basically, the S&S is a dinosaur. But it's a tried, tested
and true dinosaur. Most wrenches know how to work on them, and parts
are plentiful.
IMHO, the Mikuni (42) is perhaps the finest performance carb
out there. It is very responsive (much more than the S&S), offers
adjustments for everything (as does the S&S, except I wish the S&S
also had a remote idle speed screw), and can be ordered from many
sources. However, parts are a little tougher to find, as are people
knowledgeable on them.
That being said, what's on my bike? An S&S Super E. It came
with the bike, so I can't justify changing it. And it looks cool
(hehehe). If I had to pick one of the two, though, and money being no
object, I'd get the Mikuni HSR 42.
As far as air cleaners, I would never put a velocity stack on
a street bike, not unless you enjoy rebuilds (an air filter is kinda
nice). Any of the high-performance air cleaners (SE, Ness, etc) will
suit you fine. Not familiar with the Forcewinder, though.
The hypercrapper you have on will most likely work as well,
but it weighs a ton, and looks, well...no comment.
