2005 HD Sporster, Carb'd not fuel injection.

I can ride around town all day with absolutely no problems. I can get on
the highway, and she runs fine... until I get off. After going over 55mph
and returning to low speeds, I begin to get a lot of backfires. As soon
as I stop at a redlight/stopsign, the backfires continue and I can't get
any acceleration over ~5mph. After turning the bike off and letting it
cool down, I can start back up and ride all over again - unless I bring
it back up to highway speeds.

I've replaced the sparkplugs, completely changed gas, cleaned the carb
(there was no debris in the bowl underneath), cleared all lines.

Anybody have ideas on what could be the cause, and hopefully a solution?

Thanks,
Greg

It could be air getting into your headers, see if they need tightening.
Might help.

You are sucking air somewhere, Check your exhaust for leaks. It sounds
like when the pipes get hot, they expand and then suck air.
