Has anybody out there had any problems with a Vmax loosing 2nd gear. At
around 6000R's my 92 Vmax pops out of 2nd into neutral. If so, what was
damaged internally.

Thanks in advance,

Hi Scott,
Having worked at a Yamaha dealer for quite a while in the past, I can
tell you that what you describe is a common problem. One that Yamaha
issued an updated fix for. Your local Yamaha dealer should be well
aware of it. Good luck.

Scott & Lee,

I have just acquired an '85 Vmax with the same problem, however mine
seems more likely to happen at relatively low revs and throttle
openings. I downloaded the '85 parts fiche from "85 Vmax Parts Pages"
(http://fly.hiwaay.net/~drbailey/85MAXPRT.htm), and this includes frame
K-4, Technical bulletin, Transmission Shimming Procedures (attached in
e-mail). I have wondered if this might be the answer to my problem. Is
this the fix of which you speak, Lee? If so, could you give me any idea
of the effort involved? It would seem like dropping the engine and
splitting the cases would involve a significant amount of shop time, and
so I have contemplated this as an off-season home shop project; is this
feasible? My dealer suggested strengthening the shift star wheel cam
spring, which I tried with no success.

Mine also idles on 3 1/2 cylinders; it appears that the left front (does
anyone know the cylinder number order?) fires only about every other
ignition cycle. Once under power the engine runs very cleanly. A local
DynoJet Dynamometer shop suggested a dirty low-speed carburetor circuit,
saying that the passage/s is/are very tiny and easily fouled. Any tips
on cleaning the carb while maintaining synch, or will I have to
disassemble the carb set to such a degree that re-synching is
inevitable? If so, I assume a manometer is required; is the procedure
something a reasonably competent home mechanic can undertake with a
probability of success?

Thanks for any help. Ride fast (okay, but ride safe, too).

You will have to repair the transmission I guess. $2000 at a workshop.

Same thing happened to my '83 Venture, '78 turbo'ed XS-11 and countless other
bike models.

The dogs (inter-locking fingers) on the 2nd gears have been rounded and will
forever be unreliable.

The fix is to gank the motor and pop the bottom half of the crank case and
replace 3 components and "tune" the tranny gears. Which I have done to the
above engines with 100% success in 2nd gear durability.

Replace:

- the 2 gears the interlock for 2nd gear
- the shift fork for the slider gear.

- Buy 1 or 2 tranny gear shims for the diameter of this particular tranny shaft.
shim the stationary gear toward the slidder by one or 2 shims.

Good luck.

Sounds like worn dogs on the gears. From what you describe, either
clutchless shifting or shifting too hard/fast will wear the gears like
this, and will *pop* out of gear. Under-cutting the transmission can
fix this, and can use stock parts. 2K$ sounds like rape or highway
robbery for a tranny job. I have paid less for a
double-throw-down-super-industrial rebuild, with undercut and super duty
gears. I would only pay that much for an Orient gearbox (which
generally processes 300hp without so much as a flinch). For Vmax stuff,
I have heard that this guy is a magician with anything Max-wise:

He also has many go fast goodies, like turbos, chain drive conversions,
and many other toys (Big Chief say: Fire Good. We will Smoke Tire to
be brothers now.)

Good luck.

From what I was told by Yamaha Pre 86 Vmax and Ventures had bad
trannys. 2nd gear was the problem. The bike had so much tourqe that it
would eat 2nd. But I was told that the problem was fixed from 86 on..
