I have a 1986 ZX600 Kawasaki Ninja and have been force to tear down my engine
and replace the head gasket. There has been a leak between the cylinders and
the coolant system. The performance was good though. So I have the engine
all apart and a new head gasket on order. I took the head into a machine shop
to check for worpage and the head was fine. So all that I can figure is that
the gasket failed, causing the leak. Now when I put things back together I am
wanting to use a sealant between the cylinder block, head gasket and head.
What and where can I get a good head gasket sealant? I have been told
that Nissan makes a good one but is expensive. I am going to check on that
today.

Your local auto parts store will have PermaTex brand sealants. I have
used them on places where my gasket kit didn't come with a gasket but
the original was trashed and never leaked any coolant at all. I suggest
running a small bead around the water jackets and maybe around the edge
(not side) of the head gasket. This should stop any leaks.

From everything I have heard and learned, you should NOT use a sealant
on factory head gaskets. Some of them might be all right with it, but
I know of at least a few that are not. And of course, of you get some
of it in oil passages, you can do a lot of damage to the engine (same
with RTV instead of gaskets on engine cases, etc.) If it works for
you, more power to you, but most head gaskets seal just fine without
any help.
