I have always assumed that crotch rockets were 600cc class sportbikes that
can go in excess of 150+ mph. Having chatted with a few coworkers, they
tried to define it as "mini-bikes"... small miniature bikes that fit between
your crotch but can reach high 70's mph.

What's your definition of a crotch rocket?

The Replica's:
R1, R6, 929, F4, GSXR-600, 750 & 1000, *ZX12, 11, 9, 7 & 6R's, RC-51,
TL-R, *Ducati 996, 748, Aprilia Mille & TR *Datona & TT600. Did I
miss any? The criteria, of course, is those "childish looking Power
Ranger" paint jobs & gaudy decals". This sets off an alarm mechanism
to the Cops & general citizenry that there's an antisocial lawbreaker
in the vicinity;)

*Marginally subdued paint & decal schemes.

crotch rockets are sportbikes in general. maybe there's an exact spec but i
don't know it. your estimation sounds about right though.

small miniature bikes are called pocketbikes, not crotch rockets...

Any bike that has the general look of a racebike and can go real fast. CBRs,
Ninjas, ZXs, YZFs, RCs, GSXRs, etc... with a 600cc, 750cc, 900cc, 1000cc, etc
engine.

Any bike with a high "power to weight" ratio, that makes you
look like a monkey humping a football when you ride it.

"Crotch rocket" goes back to 1975, at least, when
Yamaha RD-350's were called "crotch rockets".

In order to keep the front wheel on the ground under hard acceleration, the
RD-350 rider had to put his crotch on top of the gas tank...

Any and all sport/sport touring bike. Some may not agree with the latter, but I
think the XX, ZX12/11, Busa are all crotch rockets, but not pure sport bikes.
Again with the race style and high power

So a Ninja 250 isn't a "crotch rocket"?

Personally I think the term is mostly used by people who don't like
sportbikes, don't like motorcycles, or don't know what a sportbike is.

MY definition of a crotch rocket would be one of the true race replicas
such as an RC51, I.E. something about as practical as a rubber crutch in
an orthopedics ward. (But fun, mind you...)

However, nobody except sportbikers knows that there's any difference
between a Ninja 250 and a 'Busa, so to most of the great unwashed public
a "Crotch Rocket" is any motorcycle with a cowl.

I was near my transalp and over heard some lady tell her son that if he got
a bike it better not be a crotch rocket like that one pointing to the TA.

I don't know what the definition is really but this seems to fit the general
implication of the phrase. The meaning I usually take from the expression
is 'any sport bike' (in the recent past that usually meant Japanese), and in
it's most basic form, simply not a HD.

Reminds me of when I traded in my purple GS500 for a blue SV650. The sales guy
says, "You know, most people won't even realize you have a different bike."
Probably right.

Dear David:

Perhaps you haven't heard, but there are sport bikes made by non-Japanese
manufacturers. It seems there's this company called Ducati, another one
called Aprilia. There might be a few others, too.

But then, if it is simply not an HD, then we should salute our brothermen
on Goldwings, Viragos, Shadow Aeros, Vulcans, not to mention those
neat sportbikes that KTM, Husky and Husaberg make for motocross.
Oh yeah, how about that wonderful Montessa trials sportbike?

Take your blinders off, guy (that goes for "K. Williams", too).

I guess my brevity enabled you to draw some conclusion that I had a myotic
view of what motorcycles exist in the current market place. That is not the
case.

Since I don't know that an exact definition of 'crotch rocket' exists and
don't use the term myself, I tried to convey what other's have implied when
they use that term in reference motorcycles I've owned over the years.
First time I heard it was after I purchased a 900 Ninja in '84, (don't think
there were any similar Euro bikes at the time, and it stayed that way for
quite a while). As an aside, a number of times I've had people say "so it's
no a HD" when I've mentioned "my motorcycle" simply because I didn't say "my
HD". That's when I get the 'crotch rocket' line.

I did not intent to slight the Ducati or Aprilia crowd when I agreed with K
Williams (doubt that he did either) list of bikes that I believe generally
constitute the genera of 'crotch rockets' as viewed by the masses.

Turn of the condescension filter please.

Type in "Crotch Rocket" into a search engine and see what comes up. You may
be surprised.

A "crotch rocket" can be defined as a space-going module that is oddly
phallic in shape. Rather than utilizing the conventional booster
configuration (as seen with space shuttle launch configurations), the
boosters are, instead, two large spheres that are attached at the bottom of
said "crotch rocket."

People who know nothing about bikes aren't going to think of Italy when seeing
a CBR fly by.
