Hey, I live by this BWM riding dude who has a very nice, all black, armored jacket.  However, he is a dick and will not tell me where to obtain one.  Here in Reno during the summer it is too damn hot for leather (which is too bad 'cause I crashed last summer w/o leather on) and I need some protection.

If this guy is jerking me, what do you all reccomend for leather for the summer?

I have both leather and nylon/kevlar jackets, leather is a hell of alot
cooler in the summer then nylon/kevlar

How does the kevlar stack up against leather anyway? Does it retain its color,
shape, texture after a yr? Seems that leather would be more supple and look
good alot longer. Does anyone have a kevlar jacket that they've used for a few
years? I use wide kevlar seat covers on this race ski (seadoo) for wetsuit
grip, and they get very rough and scratchy after a while. They do cycle
between wet and dry constantly however, so probably much different.

Lighter leathers are availiable as are some synthetics , I understand the
extreme weather fluctuations as I live in Carson City .Personally I say just
say deal with it ,barring particuraly hot days .Because It seems hot until your
sliding on pavement ,THEN its hot!For me when it gets too hot ,I either ride up
in the mountains (my favorite) or I take my jeep(topless). For killer selection
I would check out Chapperal cycle, none of the local shops have very good
selection or prices . good luck and try to keep the sticky side down

I think Cycle World(or another bike mag) did a test of leather vs jeans
vs Kevlar. Jeans went 4 feet on asphalt before burning through.
Kevlar went 18 feet. Leather went 75 feet! No doubt about
it, "motorcycle-grade" leather gives the best protection. Not sure
about the durability of its finish though and how it stacks up against
Cordura/Kevlar jackets.

If you must wear leather and you are riding in the middle of summer, I would
recommend a perforated Vanson leather jacket <
http://www.vansonleathers.com/ >. If you are going to be doing stop and go
traffic in the summer, a black leather jacket, whether perforated or not,
will probably cause you to die from heat stroke. In that case I would go
with a light colored, fully vented synthetic like the Aerostich Darien <
http://www.aerostich.com/riderwearhouse.store >.

All I have is cordura so I do not claim to be an expert but...

The best buy on GOOD leather I have found is the official Triumph line, not nearly Vanson or Langlitz quality but still very good and very affordable.  $300 or less for most of the stuff I looked at, unfortunately I'm too big for them and will have to get someone to custom make one to get a decent jacket.

If I had to do it all over again I'd consider the Aerostich Roadcrafter 1 or 2 piece suits, indestructable with great customer service from the maker for alterations and repairs.  According to them kevlar, though better than jeans, is NOT the answer for bikers.  I do have a Draggin Jeans kevlar shirt but have never been unfortunate to test it  in a getoff.
