Hey guys. I just bought a 2003 CBR954RR. I have yet to ride it. I pick it
up in the morning. Can anyone give me some advice on which exhaust system
would go superbly with this machine. I want something that sounds deep and
not whiny, but I also want the extra horses. Any opinions on Kerker Pipes?
Power Commander III? Im new at this game, but I cant wait to have my own
unique bike an am willing to learn in the process to getting there!
Thanx in advance,
Anna C

If your new at this game, keep the bike stock, and get some training. A
CB954RR doesn't need more horses, it's got more then anyone can use, except
possibly a handful of world-class racers.

You don't think that perhaps "superbly" might be in the ear of the beholder?

You really think you need much in the way of extra horses? Are you aware
that most pipes don't necessarily provide much in the way of "horses",
without a few other choice and well chosen mods to go with it? And once you
have "gone with it", it might cost you 4-8K rpm power in exchange for 12K
rpm power?

Just curious.....my own experince is that my Honda has more power with the
mods I've chosen, but darned if I can find them below say 8-9-10K rpms. And
feeling around for power much above that is usually secondary to keeping the
front wheel down, staying alive, out of jail, hoping the modded brakes are
as good as they were 20 seconds prior, etc etc.

>Any opinions on Kerker Pipes?

Yep. I've got one on my 929. The slip on anyway.

> Power Commander III?

Got one of them as well. Custom Troy-map and everything.

Your experience with motorcycles, and modding motorcycles in general is?

"Learning" on something like a big Honda can be an intimidating experience,
depending on where you are coming from, and where you would like to go.

I own 954 RR too and there are two different things about exhaust systems...
1st you can buy only bolt-on(the best choice if you are city-town rider, half
racer)and if you want power from "the floor" (low and middle rpm's) and it's
sounds excellent deep (I have Akrapovic installed) and 2nd if you are true
racer (like red line)you can install complete exhaust system but you will
lose some low and middle power but after 7K till the end of power you will
get 10 extra HP.. if you buy complete exhaust system you will have to
install Power Commander III.
Whatever you take - put AKRAPOVIC on cause is the best
And one important thing for your safe - install front shock absorber (I have
Ohlins) because the front wheel is very very nervous.

Always nice to hear from enthusiasts.

You realize that recommending $2500 R/T Ohlins forks may not be something
all new 954 riders can appreciate? Or afford?

Assuming of course you really meant the front "shock absorber" and weren't
really talking about the real wheel?

A bolt-on end can will give you the sound you're looking for and improve
appearance while also dropping a few pounds. Moreover, it allows you to
keep the RR's HTEV variable-geometry exhaust gadget that boosts midrange
torque. In general, bolt-ons will add a few ponies and foot-pounds over
the full rev range.

Sport Rider magazine occasionally includes dyno charts for a variety of
pipes in its multibike shootouts (e.g., 8/02), which are quite
revealing. Some of the full exhaust systems are disasters. They crater
the torque curve in midrange (where you spend 90% of the time) and boost
power only near redline--and not even very much. Unless you have a
tuner you can trust to pick a pipe that works well on your bike and can
dial it in for optimum performance, I'd suggest staying away from a full
system.

He's refering to a steering damper.

Do some research at www.fireblades.org You will find all the answers
:) And search messages before you post, this subject has been
exhausted over and over at that site.

Enthusiasm costs money too!

I've just installed a full Akra on my RC51 and, well, it's nice, but I have
to eat noodles for a few weeks now because I am poor, happy but poor :)

What he said. Then after you read save some money and get a Hindle ;)

Seriously, listen to Reassembler and just get some miles under your belt.
Maybe go to some track days or take a class.

Since the odds are you'll ignore that advice. Don't waste your money on a
slip-on. MAYBE they'll give you a couple of extra horses, but mostly they
are a noise maker. Get a full system. Arata is nice choice, and like I
said I prefer a Hindle at half the price. If money is tight, you won't need
a power commander with a Hindle. You will with most all the other pipes (I
say this because most of the pipes will leave a hole in the lower end of the
RPM range that the PC takes care of). Its not bad with the Hindle. Still
get a PC if you can.

For general information check out cycleforums.com

Oh, and stay away from Kerker. It really has been a long time since you've
been on a bike. :)

Good luck!

Hey Troy,
Thanx for the reply. My experience is that I have never modified a bike.
The first motorcycle I have ever rode/owned was a 99 CBR900 and I absolutely
loved it. So when I say Im new to this game, the game would be in
modifications to a bike. As for riding...Im not an expert, and I have a lot
to learn, but Im decent.
Thanx again,
Anna C

Well, my first Honda was a 900RR, and I owned a 929 for about 2-1/2 years
( traded it off yesterday ) with some of the mods you are interested in (
slip on, PCIII, damper,SS lines, pads, usual crap ) so if you are interested
in anything specific, let me know.
