It warmed up today so I dug the trailer out of the snow and took the F4i to
the shop.

Any guesses why it won't start?

1. Not getting fuel
2. Not getting spark
3. Not getting air
4. Bad starter
5. And so on...

Without *additional* information...there's very little to say.

Here you go.

Battery was dead, so over Christmas I charged the battery. It fired right
up but didn't go to fast idle. So I tweaked the throttle and the bike died.
Battery dead again upon trying to restart.

Charged the battery, the bike cranks but won't fire. Repeat. No need in
wearing out the starter, the bike has always started instantly, like a fuel
injected bike should. So today I took it to the dealer, I want to beat the
spring rush and be ready for a short notice ride to Phoenix.

The bike was real low on fuel, so I am thinking bad fuel pump or some other
fuel related issue. Maybe a blown fuse I couldn't find?

I'll just have to wait for the call from the dealer.

If it was real low on fuel it could just be a case of bad fuel in the
tank from sitting over the winter.

Bad gas? No gas? Frozen gas line? How cold is it by you? I think the
Buell would have a hard time starting now as it is going to be 0
degrees with a 20 mph wind. I won't try and start it till it gets a
little warmer though. I have a new battery and it is on a tender.

Good luck getting it started.

Out of gas? Its a Honda? No air in the tires?

It was 55F here today, I got 60 miles in on the couch, it goes into
the shop on Monday for this springs goody install.

Gas? That is a possibility. I do believe I have a fuel problem.

It's a Honda? Yeah, that is a distinct possibilty. My luck with Honda
equals yours with Fords.

Tires need air? Hmmmm.

Yeah it was 47f here today. I saw a few bikes on the road as I trailered

the F4i to the shop.

> the shop on Monday for this springs goody install.

I just want the fucker to start. I know if I go to Pep Boys and buy a
battery I could start both the old VWs within a few minutes.

Anyway I am gearing up for the ride to PHX. I see that is about 900 miles
for you and about 600 for me. I guess I'm buying lunch. I think we should
make it to Flagstaff on the first day. Then it is an easy ride to PHX the
next day.

Anyway, I pretty much commited to this ride, even if I have to act like a
Harley rider and trailer the bike because of "bad" weather. I'm planning on
late April to early May. No matter the weather will be a crap shoot. Cold
or wet or both. Followed by blazing warmth in AZ.

I always hate taking any vehicle to a stealership and saying "I don't
know whats wrong...please find it and fix it for me"....WAY too much
trust in that statement for just any stealership.

I'm gearing up as well. The last weekend in April is out, the wife has
something that Friday and Saturday which will require me to wear the
skirt in the family for a few days. I'm figuring maybe the weekend
before if the weather agree's, or the weekend after?

Anyway, Flagstaff is a bit of a run for me for a partial, and first
day. Nearly 700 miles.I thought you couldn't leave till after work on
Friday, which means you would be trying to do 520 miles between Friday
end of work and nighttime?

I was thinking Monticello Friday night, then its only 400 miles to
Phoenix the next day, Monticello is 300 for you Friday after work and
400 for me. This isn't a Phoenix argument though is it, but its a
Bisbee one? I haven't decided what I think about that yet, thats like
another 300 miles roundtripping from Phoenix. I might want to just
hang out with Bob, maybe he'll let me do wheelies on his sv or
something.

My only worry is the big mountain passes along the Continental Divide.
I figure I can handle anything on your side of the Divide that time of
year, but it can be absolutely a whiteout along the Divide. I hadn't
thought about trailering the bike to a KOA or something near Moab,
drop the van and trailer, pay for a campsite for a few days as though
I'll actually be there, and then take off on the bike.

It would make sense that a small amount of fuel will go bad quicker than
a larger amount, epecially if that fuel is sitting there in a big empty
tank with all sorts of temp changes. Fuel saver is cheap enough - I just
dump the stuff in there any time I think the bike might have to sit for
more than a couple weeks (that hasn't happened in ages though).

Today its going to be 60F and sunny. Time to get the KLR out and
charge up the battery a little.

Hey Steve where are the ice races? Do they still have them in FT
Atkinson? Sounds like something I can do next weekend.

I'll keep ya apprised the next time they run. I forget the name of the
park they were GOING to run them in today, but I guess the ice still
isn't thick enough to safely race.

Agreed, Monticello it is. I'll buy dinner. Yeah, I agree with hangin'
with Bob and not going to Bisbee also.

And I get to do wheelies on the RD 2 smoke first! Hell, I'll be happy to
just sit on it for the memories.

Leave April 18th or May 2nd? I'm ready, the bike isn't. I think I need to
add a big magnetic tank bag to the gear list.

Monticello has a Best Western and a National 9 Inn I think, the rooms
at the Best Western are huge, I haven't been inside the National 9.
Monticello is a little light on food variety, the Lamplighter is a
local restaurant, and they had a great little local pizza joint last
time I was there.

Sounds about right. I worry about the weather in mid-April, but we can
decide closer to the date. I'll get ready for the 18th, and if the
stars don't line up I'll plan on the 2nd. The 2nd should work no
matter what, it shouldn't be blizzardy in the mountain passes...just
cold. April 18 though....thats still blizzard time in the mountains.

I've got clearance from the wife for both dates.

Hey Bryan

I can't remember the symptoms you described in past posts but I think it was
a starting/running problem?Anyway, I read this on a KLR group today and it
may apply if the bike was sitting for a long time and you neglected fuel
stabilizer.

Just a thought.

Hi Michael-

This reminds me of a problem that I had with another bike a few years
ago that three mechanics couldn't figure out, and took me nearly two
years to get beat.

The cause ultimately was simple: There was varnish on the inside of
my gas tank from old gas. It would randomly slough off in sheets
large enough to clog the petcock under vacuum. This would cause the
bike to stall, and not start. After a random amount of time with no
vacuum applied to the petcock the varnish would float away from the
petcock, and all would be fine again for another random amount of
time, until another varnish sheet floated against the petcock.

The fix was equally simple: I got a gallon of carb cleaner from my
local parts house, filled the tank, let it soak overnight, flushed,
repeated, and reassembled the bike.

Bike ran like a dream after that.

Cheers,
Matthew

Thanks Rob. The bike started once over Christmas, then it would never start
again and the battery wouldn't hold a charge.

So the bike is in the shop. When I get it back I'll let everyone know what
the problem was. With any luck it'll all be a defective battery that I
could have replaced myself.

I just want the bike ready when the weather turns. Damn the expense. No
new bike this year.

First full commuting day of the year today!!! And with the 1100
getting its spring makeover, it was KLR time!!! Of course, we're
getting 8" of snow tonight. But today was nice!!

Did I mention the KLR started right up?

You shouldn't need to, unless you'd been to, say, Patagonia and back
on it, twice. That's what KLR's do best.

The roads are || <==that close to being clean enough to ride this
morning. But unfortunately, our parking lot here at work doesn't get
much sunlight, so it's still partially iced up. So no commuting for me :(
