Hi all,

I am in the market for a new bike, I am selling my 94 Honda CB 1000 (Yes
the "Big One") and want something with a little (read lot) better handling
characteristics. I am torn between the lokks of the 750 half fairing and the
Honda 900RR. I know they are very different bikes, I would just like a few
comments aboutthe 750 from any past or present owners.

Thanks in advance.

I know ( believe from the way people rave about them) that the F4 or R6 will
tear the bike a new one but I want some "true" real world insight into the
bike.

Ducati's are fun to ride, and fun to own, in my experience. On a truly
objective level, they really make little sense -- many things Japanese can
provide the same or better performance for less money. The Ducatis cost more to
buy and own, but are just as reliable, in my experience, as other bikes. The
sound is something else. Maybe the TL (S or R) come close in sound, but still
don't do it for me.

Yes, the fireblade and 750 are completely different bikes. I'm sure you'll be
happy with which ever one you choose.

I'm a little biased so take it for what's it worth...Ducati is the way
to go. I used to feel that why pay so much for something when the Jap
bikes do all the same...well now that I own a ducati I know why. There
is nothing out there that sounds like a Duc. the handling is great. i
like the power and torque at the low end and mid range, to negotiate
the turns w/ aplomb. Personally I would go for the 900SS, a little
more power. The Duc seems to hold its value, it's more exotic, sounds
great, runs great, looks great. Look around, how many do you see out
there? You'll be glad to get it, and when you need to resell, they
resell easily. just my opinions. right now i'm riding the 748 and i
just got accepted for the MH900e so you know i'm very biased.

I've got a 2 1/2 year old 750 SS on which I've done 14,000 mile. I've
also had to replace the front wheel bearings, the steering head bearings
and am now to repair the top end after a cam belt slipped resulting in
major engine damage. Estimated cost about UKP 1000, $1600.

Maybe the problem is you didn't follow the maintenance guidelines. It's
right there in your book and the problems you've listed are because you
either didn't pay attention to the schedule or whoever did you work ought
to be working on Honda's.

All modern Ducati's need to have the belts changed no later than 12,000
miles otherwise they might slip due to tooth wear or break. Either thing
will cause the valves to get to know the piston intimately. As for your
steering head bearings - a common mistake is to over tighten these. Finger
tight is all that's required. You might want to take a look at whoever
works on your bike and find someone else.

Ducati's are as reliable as any other brand - and a ton more fun to ride…
